92Typhoon Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 I'm going to stop by Checker after work tonight and pick up a new thermostat. For the Typhoon, it's simple, because there's really only one option. For the Lumina, are there any differences between these? Prestone 758197 Prestone 352197 I noticed one says Generation 2 and one is Standard. Is it worth the extra 2 bucks? Anyone have a part # for a 180* stat? I couldn't come up with any from Autozone or Checker. Do they even make a 180* for the 3.4? Thanks for the help. Hopefully this will be my last question for a while. These cars can't be as bad as a Typhoon Quote
93CutlassSupreme Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 maybe the Gen 2 thermostat is a fail-safe design, where the thermostat will fail in the open position instead of closing Quote
92Typhoon Posted April 5, 2005 Author Report Posted April 5, 2005 maybe the Gen 2 thermostat is a fail-safe design, where the thermostat will fail in the open position instead of closing Hmm... Makes sense. You'd think they would have finally figured out how to make them that way. Wonder if they know at Checker. Usually, at our Checker, if the computer doesn't tell them, they don't know, but there's one old guy that might. Thanks, I'll try that one. What have I got to lose but a motor? Quote
Crimson Fury Z Posted April 5, 2005 Report Posted April 5, 2005 yeah, there are 180 stats. i got the hypertech one, but you can ask and see if checkers might have their brand of 180 for the 3.4. Quote
95 3-4 Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 It has to be fail safe for that kind of money, I think the moto-rad fail safes I use to get at checker were $12. Havent bought one for awhile Quote
pwmin Posted April 6, 2005 Report Posted April 6, 2005 i'd go with this one. its a 180 and its then gen 2. i belive the gen 2 is the same as the stant superstat. its made of stainless steel instead of crap and has a little vent in it. http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?mfrcode=PST&mfrpartnumber=751180&parttype=134&ptset=A Quote
SnowDrift Posted April 8, 2005 Report Posted April 8, 2005 Go to your local dealer and buy an OEM thermostat. I believe you'll be much happier with the performance of it. They're much more accurate with opening and closing temps to maintain consistent engine temp. Quote
