skiiirt
how messy of a job is dropping the pan?..I am considering looking just cuz i am interested in the condition of my tranny. But if I am going to spill the shit everywhere its not worth it to me. I'll go get a free evaluation from mister transmission if its too messy

skiiirt
Ya Mister Transmission inspects tons of shit for free. I may just go there and get my car inspected. just to see how things are going with my car Maybe they can find some useless problems i can waste my money on
luminator94
Those pics were taken right after I dropped the pan. The tranny has 90k on it. The reason I did it was because lately when I put it in D, it won't go into gear, the engine would just rev. But after the filter change, everything is good! The trick to not making a mess is loosening one end of the pan first so the fluid doesn't go everywhere, I thought about drilling a hole in the bottom of the pan for a drain, but I didn't. I figured I wouldn't have the right size bolt for a plug because that's how my luck is. I was also suprised at how loose some of the bolts were, just finger tight! I used Simple Green to clean the pan up real good, turned out good. Took me about an hour to do. Changed the oil while I was under there to. THe_DeTAiL3R
Another little trick for less messy pan drop: 1. Get a big sheet of plastic, place it over the garage or whatever, and drive the car onto it. 2. I have a liquid/air hand pump which cost like $20. I jammed the tube into the dipstick tube and sucked out about 4L which made dropping the pan a bit less messy, cause there was less fluid. If you think you have a re-useable gasket, use it. If not, use a RUBBER gasket- not CORK!!! or you will likely have leaks.

IF the autozone monkeys give you a cork gasket, go back and slap them and take away their bananas and ask them for a RUBBER gasket. Cork SUCKS. PeNZ
How hard is it to change the tranny filter? Does it just go on and off?
THe_DeTAiL3R
How hard is it to change the tranny filter? Does it just go on and off? You twist while gently pulling if down (off). This is Turbo123's excellent writeup: http://members.aol.com/regal231/xmission.htm I think the hardest part is just getting the damn seal (for the filter) off. Next time I do it if it's in decent shape I'm just gonna leave the old one in the tranny.

I'll go get a free evaluation from mister transmission if its too messy oh, it's messy. not messy enough to justify paying a jiffy lube $100 to do it though I did that today, and although it was a pain in the ass, taking forty minutes and spending $30 is way better than blowing $100 for a shop to do it. Besides, I'd rather work on the car than someone who doesn't personally care about it. I suggest putting down some cardboard or something, because a pan won't catch every single drop once you get the bolts loose, even if you only do one side and crack it open. That goopy shit was weird stuff. Felt like mud, but it's really metal shavings and shit. Make sure you clean the magnet off real good. And I left the seal in it, too. Didn't even bother trying.
