GOT2B GM
Ever since I bought my 93 Z34 a year ago, it has a tick for the first 5 mins or so when the engine is cold. Whether it's lifter/valvetrain related or piston slap, I don't know. I've been running full synthetic with ACD filters ever since I got it and I change the oil diligently every 5000 km(3000mi). Once the car is up to operating temp, it goes away. It always runs really nice, and has no lack of power. I was wondering if other LQ1 owners have the same condition, and if this is just a "normal" GM sound like 3X00's have. Thanks
chadz34
Mine does that too in the summer. It doesn't appear to hurt anything though. You can hear it at the front of the car and sides. It's not that loud though is it? Mine isn't. I think all LQ1's sound like that.
RacerX
That's not something I would consider normal. Mine certainly doesn't do it. And I'm thinking that's a lifter tap.
MoTox8410
mine does it as well its quiet..I dont notice it inside the car explain lifter tap??
GOT2B GM
You can only really hear mine standing beside the front fender wells, and very faintly inside the car. Its not loud at all, it just bugs me. Is it the lifters being worn or the cam carrier they slide in? I was thinking if I ever have to do head gaskets or another T-belt I would try to fix the little ticking.
sonyman87
sounds like the cams are dry and once oil reaches them tick = gone
JJ77
If you use lucas oil treatment the next time you change your oil it should quiet it down some.
GOT2B GM
So that Lucas stuff fixes lifter tick? If anyone has had luck with a certain product that at least quietens lifter tick, let me know.
timg
Valvoline Max Life oil and the Max Life Engine Protectant will both take care of 90% of the lifter tick. They're the only products I've used that worked. Tim
WhiteOut
I've got a similar problem with ticking on my engine. It only does it when the engine is warming up, and even then its pretty quiet (you can't hear it unless your outside the car). I've used Mobil1, QS full synthetic, and a couple differant conventional oil and its allways had the condition. I've got to change my oil tomorrow though, so I'll have to try the lucas stuff though and see if it works.
Psych0matt
I've always used valvoline max life and i usually put in a can of engine restore. the only time I remember hearing the tick was when I was a little low on oil.
Turbo231
I believe there is a fix for this over at http://www.60degreeV6.com. It can be fixed drilling a few holes in a few places. Mine ticks too, but I'm too lazy to fix it. Check over there, you'll probably find your answer.
GOT2B GM
Hmm.... I'll have to check that drilling idea out at 60. In the meantime, I'm going to try an additive to see if it makes a difference. I just changed my oil 400 kms ago so I'll probably just wait till its due for the next change to add it. One question about the Lucas, is it really thick? Or does it flow easily? I never really liked the idea of pouring "glue" into my engine.
