avitlqc
Well my trans went out about a month and a half ago. I have a 1990 grand prix ste turbo. 3.1 turbo with the 440t4 (aka 4t60). I am trying to decide if I should just replace the trans with another automatic or switch it over to a 5 spd manual. I have both of the transmissions in my garage and all the hardware to convert my car to manual from auto. My question is, is it worth it to switch it to the 282 manual and how hard would it be, or should I just replace the auto and call it good. I would appreciate any imput on this. terryk2003
What would you rather drive? thats pretty much what i was thinkin...its all in what you'd rather drive...i've also heard that the 5-speed TGP's are slightly faster...but, i don't think its much.. avitlqc
I have never owned an automatic before this but I dont really have a preferance because I like the way this one drove before the trans went out even if I get kinda bored while driving it around town. I miss the clutch and having to shift gears, but I have my nissan pulsar and mitsubishi eclipse that are 5 spds so i can drive a 5 spd. I am also kinda wondering what the resale would be like for a Grand prix ste turbo with a 5 spd because they didnt offer them from the factory, gotta love having one of only 1000 cars made. LOL
brianteel
the resale on any mods is crap. the 5spd is nice though

LOL Just like Brian said, 90% of the time, you can't get your money back out of the mods you put into the car
Aaron
He would be able to get more, if he did the conversion right, and didn't go cheap. A 5-speed swap in an auto-only car is one of the few mods that will pay off, ask TGPilot.

How many more average joes are out there?

How many more average joes are out there? You'd be surprised here as well. I think we can agree that a lot of people like 5-speeds. Hell the Z34s will grab 500-1000 more for just the 5-speed, and I think the same would result for a TSTE. Also, you might be able to pass it for a factory job. brianteel
let me tell you the 5 speed does not do anything to the value of the car. look at the mods in my sign and i was trying to get $6000 and alot of people siad i want the car but no one could come up with the money. it really comes down is some one is looking for what you are selling. avitlqc
thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. I am still going to have to think about it some more because it looks like alot of time will be needed to switch it over and i only have a month before the car has to be running as that is when the next pontiac show is. Has anyone ever done this conversion before and if so how long did it take and was it extremly complicated :?:
brianteel
i have done it i know a few other guys have too. the hardest part i found was getting the clutch master cylinder to stay in the fire wall. you need to pull the dash off other then that it is easy
EurosportZ34
let me tell you the 5 speed does not do anything to the value of the car. pry not since automatics are generally more expensive than manuals...but if there were two 3.4-powered cars with the exact same options, miles, and shit, and the only difference was that one was a 5-Speed and the other was an automatic...which one would you choose? me, hell i'd hit up the 5-Speed in a heart beat! 5-Speed W-bodies are pretty rare. a 5-Speed swap would definately be ALOT more work, but if you don't mind driving a manual then i'd say go for it!!!
