Extensive test of Accelerometers

Anyone wanting to consider one of the many Acceleration Meters/Accelerometers out there might want to snatch up the May 2005 Car and Driver!! There is a very in depth (pages, with graphs!!) article that covers all the meters out there from Escort, Tazzo VPC, Pocket Dyno, Nology PDA-Dyno, Race Tech AX22, G-Tech Pro and the old standard (that did pretty good) Vericom!

To cut to the chase, and to use the most known/used unit out there that first started the affordable range of accelerometers, the G-Tech Pro, times in the quarter mile with a front wheel drive G6 (The all new G6 :puke: , so what: The all new scented diapers, big deal :lol2: typical GM  ) was off by all of .05 seconds, that means a track time of 14.1 would be read by the G-Tech Pro as 14.05, damn close!!! Quarter mile speed with the G6 was off by 1 mph meaning a 88 mph run would be read as 89 mph, again damn close, and don’t know many non-pros that run that close with their own times drag after drag  myself included 8) !

Now those waiting for the drag strips to open and see what their cars will do can find some abandoned road and have at it, zero to sixty times too!! 8) So snatch up some good reading, finally we get some meaningful and well done tests, all the damn mags out there these days only have pretty pictures, worthless  !!

thats good to know...specially since i got my g-tech last week...all the times i ran were really close to each other, so i figured it was probably pretty accurate...thanx for posting that info though

Cool!!! should make you feel better 8) The article also states why drag times can differ, its the roll-out, the drag timer does not start until you cross the line, all Accelerometers begin recording soon as you move, stage deep and values can be off with drag timers as its waiting for you to cross the line before it starts recording. Now see if someone can see the flaw in that statement :leaving:

cool to know. I figured the Gtech pro was good since all the cars I tested (stock) were right about where they should be. Though I thought the trap speed could be off more than 1mph. Guess not

Well the original G-Tech and others did not have the ability to compensate for the effects of launch; the car tilting up front and dropping down in back, some of the newer models can compensate for this as well as the new G-Techs. So you were probably right about differences if it was an older unit, of course there are other things an operator might miss getting things consistent.

Are you sure the G6 went 14.1 and not 15.1?

 actually at the drags it went from a 16.15 to a 16.6 (those variations ALL cars have!!!), I just preffered using more enjoyable numbers us slightly faster guys-TGP/TSTE owners might be dealing with 8) . Is that much better   The smelly G6 with the 3.5 V6 did a 15.8 in Motor Trend, that is a .8 second difference on the same car basically new/very few miles  .... now, who cares how good these A-Meters are, or Times Slips gotten at the track

A statement made by a very large aftermarket tuner said 1 in 10 cars (same car/engine etc) is fast, 2 or 3 are strong and the rest are junk/slow!!!
