Guest TurboSedan
i was quoted $326 today at a very reputable local machine shop (i've done business with them before and they have been great). the shortblock machine work and assembly details: $80 - hot tank & mangnuflux 'V' cylinder block $0 - LG5 crankshaft check $66 - aligned bored .020 over ($11/hole, or just honing if no overbore needed = $30) $30 - camshaft bearing installation + new installation of new block freeze plugs $150 - assemble entire shortblock - includes: camshaft, timing chain, pistons, rings, connecting rods, rod & main bearings, and crankshaft --------------------------------------- $326 - Total in machine & assembly work i'm still not sure if my 'V' block needs overboring yet or not. i would prefer NOT to overbore. cylinder #5 is partially melted and some of the rings are broken yet the cylinder wall looks perfect (wierd). i already have a new timing chain set, a new Melling 95HV oil pump, and my TGP heads were just rebuilt with 3-angle valve job in December (less than 5 miles on them). i already have the entire LG5 top end CLEAN and assembled. as for parts i would need: - Mahle pistons - piston rings - block freeze plugs - camshaft, lifters, & cam bearing set - set of rod & main bearings - lots of gaskets and seals does the amount for the machine & assembly work sound OK? about how much would i be looking at for the parts listed? can i get this thing rebuilt for under $800? besides the shortblock i will be doing the rest of the assembly & work myself. R Dubya
Why not save yourself that $150 and do it yourself? Have them do the cam bearings unless you have the tool, and you will need a piston ring compressor, those are really the only specialty tools needed to do it. That and a torque wrench. (which I know you have) Keep your head up Josh, dont be too down on yourself. Someday it will run again.
94CutlassSLCoupe
Damn that's a lot cheaper than they do it around here...I could probably have truck frieghted my Mopar 318 out there and back and still save money
god910
Here in town $75 to assemble a TD bottom end, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. My 509" Caddy block???? $350 That's just the shortblock. As a 30+ year mech. friend of mine said... no1kicker
That doesn't seem too bad. I would let them do the whole shortblock. That way I know it's done right. Although I wouldn't know what I'm doing, I know you do. What cam are you putting in?

What cam are you putting in? yeah i really don't want to do any work on the shortblock for the same reasons. i'm not sure what camshaft yet, i gotta study up on that but i'm thinking either stock GM or something very mild. R Dubya
I went with the Crane 2020 cam, very mild upgrade from what I was told.. the car runs fine but burns a lot of gas.. but I'm pretty sure I do have a vac leak somewhere, hopefully I can track it down this year. If thats not the prob then that cam will come out so I can get it to idle down faster.. it takes a while to kick down. Soon I will try and figure it out.
