White93z34
alright heres the rundown, its my friend bills car. 1997 GTP coupe. heres whats done to it: brand new rebuilt angine and transmission, the trans: was rebuilt with HD clutch packs and a INTENSE LSD. and mabie a few other goodies. the engine: i think .10 over, Diamond Pistons, L32 connecting ruds, INTENSE Stage 1 cam, SLP headers and downpipe, MLS headgaskets, INTENSE PCM, Autolite spark plugs, 3.4 pulley, ARP headbolts, there may be more, i forget. well anyhow he got it all back together ran great, but the rear head gasket leaked, so recently we pulled both heads and sealed them, he got it all back together again, the engine has not even 200 miles on it. so now he told me he took it out for a short drive afterwards, and it got so loud and lost so much power over the course of a short test drive that he had a headache from how loud it was, bear in mind, hes running stock mufflers too, he best described it to me as a real loud diesel engine type noise. namely due to INTENSE's recent QC problems i want to say the cam is at fault, but i really don't know. sl3196
Get those intense parts out of there! (namely the pcm and lsd!) Not real sure what it would be but something sure isn't right. Probably more then just an exhaust leak eh?
White93z34
MUCH more then an exhaust leak.
sl3196
Hope he didn't throw a rod or spin a bearing! Rockers and everything tight in there? Kinda off topic but did he put the gen 2 intense lsd in there?
White93z34
if he spun a rod or bearing i bet it would be a very different noise, hes very through and we took our time reasembleing it, so i dobut it is in how tight the rockers are. however we coulda missed something. as for the LSD, i have no idea. sl3196
as for the LSD, i have no idea.Find out quick. If its then gen 2 you better tell him to get it out quick! Do a search on clubgp and you'll find out why.
White93z34
yeah, i read about that. he's aware of whats recently gone down with intense as much as i am. its not exactly a easy job to pull it out. so not much we can do but hope for the best. 95 3-4
Most diesel engine sound like a bucket of bolts jangling around. When a gas engine sounds like this it is usually dead At the shop we have an 1977 Clark forktruck that sounds like a diesel, it has no oil pressure at idle and 5 psi at 2000 governed rpm. Bulletproof Continental engine in there we been beating on it everyday for 6+ years. I would put and oil pressure gauge on it to see what oil pressure it cold and hot, also might be nice to drain the oil and look at it in addition to cutting the oil filter open and looking for heavy metals. Its not running so rich that exh. manifolds are glowing red is it ? Also might not be bad to make sure oil is getting to the rockers, if the mains are to tight he will have gobs of pressure and a crank that dont want to spin but if forced to will eat itself up in a hurry.....Not good Sounds like it would be nice to diagnose the noise and problem to either the engine or transaxle too. JoroCorona
Sounds like oiling to me too. The only time any of my cars sounded diesel like was when they were low on oil. Check the oil pressure.
john99gtp
eh, get the lsd out at least, but the PCM is fine. They only added 2* of timing on my PCM, so theres nothing wrong with it. i dont know how a cam is gonna effect the loudness, unless it was put in wrong. Id go with 95 3-4 and JoroCorona and check the oil/oil pressure. Not to many things that can make a car loud (besides exhaust)
z34_nut
if its fireing wrong, sounds like a cam problem, try checking your timing, and did you make sure to degree the cam properly? probley some-thing stupid like that..
sonyman87
sounds like something out of balance. improper cam timing could be a falt also.
White93z34
the thing is, unless it slipd timing which is HIGHLY unlikely there is no reason for it to be out of time, all the performance parts were installed when the engine was rebuilt, it probably has around 200 miles on it now and for 180 of them it ran great. sonyman87
INTENSE LSD i heard some of those are out of round. and it probably got really bad. that would cause the transmission to require alot of power to turn. causeing the motor to work 10X harder = more sound and lots of powerloss.. take a look at them and see if there are scratches and warping
White93z34
ok.... and it makes this sound when the car is not in motion and out of gear as well. i think that rules out the diff.
