92chevyeuro
My 92 Lumina has almost 100,000 miles on it. Sometimes when I come to a stop it does not shift into first gear. I have to shift it manually into first. And it seams to have a whining sound when I accelerate. How long do these transmisions usually last? THe_DeTAiL3R
Depending on how it's driven, and how it's maintained (if it's maintained) plays a major role in the life of a transmission. Although, some will live a long life even though they aren't taken care of. Probably best thing to do would have it inspected..
Canada
How do you know its not downshifting into first? Doggy off the line?
92chevyeuro
I step on the gas and it just revs.
sonyman87
sounds like a plugged filter. little or no fluid to the transmisison will make it just slip or wine. get a pan service and see if that helps btw i have 183xxx miles onmy 4t60e and its seen hell since 104,000 miles
SleeperRed90TGp
I would say your input sprag has gone south. When you manualy put it in first gear it engages the 3rd clutch and 3rd roller clutch which seems to overcome the free wheeling in first. For a while. Mine is doing the same thing as it has done twice before. This cannot be repaired in the car. If and when you do get it rebuilt make sure they replace it with bigger(wider) aftermarket input sprag assembly. Jud

1990lumina
I don't think that tranny will work with your car...don't you have the older style called the 4T60?? That one of ebay is electronically controlled.....or was Chevy using 4T60E in the 92 Luminas already?? - Jeff L.
dbtk2
I believe the first year of the 4t60e was '93, in a Lumina at least. Shawn

92chevyeuro
Mine is the overdrive trans in it. It is a smooth trans.
dbtk2
Mine is the overdrive trans in it. It is a smooth trans. Yes, but its not the electronic version. It is the 4T60 (440T4), not the 4T60E. Basically the same tranny, just not electronic. Shawn

1990lumina
Hopefully there won't be as much sludge in it though if you do change the tranny fluid first j/k C-BAD! - Jeff L.
92chevyeuro
The tranny fluid looks very clean. I think it may have been changed not too long agao. I just hope it wasnt flushed.
