my 3.1 sounds good and loud at low RPMs but sounds very weak at high RPMs...i'm sure the 3.4 would be similar

although the sound isn't what i'd expected so i'm getting it replaced soon...

the 3.1 and 3.4 sound nothing alike...

I love both of my 3.1s without mufflers, I've heard from a good handful of people here though that 3.4s sound like ass without them.

Just think of how raspy it would be. At least put some oval bodied straight through mufflers on it, and KEEP the resonator.

pfft. lol... like everyone else is saying. its not like a nice 305 or 350 chevy block lol.

I actually like my 12 year old mufflers on my cutlass, they are the oginals and sound awsome.. kinda like a weak flowmaster 40 series

I have a y-pipe cutout for the track and run wide-open while i'm there. It is ridiculously loud. At idle it sounds like a car with no mufflers...i mean its not a tuned sound. I do it cuz it helps at the track. But if you have cops around you driving a 3.4 without muffs you will get heard block away.

does the 3.4 dohc sound bad with just straight pipe?

there is a video floating around of my Lumina with an exaust cutout at the downpipe. similar to no mufflers, no cat, no resignator, at WOT its not to bad sounding but its sure hella loud. the slightest bit of gas will sound like.. how do i put this. imagin a weedeater souped up on staroids x 10. LOUD! Every cop will know Instantly, and its kinda annoying after the first 3mins.

Now if you are talking about running a Cat only. thats a different story. Still loud but not as bad. i think someone at mymonte is running a single muffler where the cat should be and strait pipe out the back. i think thats coderedZ or something. its a red Montecarlow with P&P intakes lots of other mods. i heard his monte in person and it wasnt bad.

my Z has the factory cat and resonator, and no mufflers... and when the pipes are warm it sounds good, and isn't crazy loud (I've driven by law enforcement officials, and they haven't bothered me...)

when the pipes are cold and you hit 2k it's gonna blat louder than a straight piped cummins

I have flowmaster 40 series on the 3.1. let me tell you, its been about a year now and it's gotton real old. The drone sound on a long highway trip gets frustrating. Then again, I haven't used the door bell at my girlfriends house in a year now. She somehow 'knows' when I arrive. Must have something to do with ESP. I'm thinking about dynamat or some other type of sound insulation. Has anyone had success using this stuff against exhaust sound?

About 2 months ago I cut off the rear section of the exhaust on the cutlass. The rear section was bent up and rubbing so off it went. After I cut it I had about 2' of pipe after the cat before it ended. Man it was loud espically around 2500rpms. But it didn't sound too bad.

Here's a Clip that I took afterwards.

Here

After getting sick of it being too loud I got a J/Y exhuast system off a GP. Cut off the old rotted mufflers and threw on some Thrush mufflers. Put it on the car and it was nice and quiet. It didn't sound bad, but there seemed to be more of an echo in the exhaust.

Now I had problems with the drivers side muffler. It was at a bad angle and it was longer than the old muffer that was there, so it stuck out more. I hated it. Yesterday I had the cutlass by my friend and we took off the drivers side muffler and out a straight pipe there. A little louder, not too bad actually. And the passenger side with the muffler still has about the same flow as the straight pipe. (At Idle)

I took a video of it yesterday afternoon

HERE (WARNING 22Mb)

Now I just need to get the tips on.
