93CutlassSupreme
what's the oil pressure supposted to sit at on a 2.8 manual in neutral, warm? i have the fully digital gauges dash, and at warm idle i have 3 bars on the oil pressure gauge but a couple times today the pressure gauge went to zero bars and the "LOW" light lit up.....the engine kept on running fine, and the pressure gauge went right up when i revved up the engine. also, are pressure sending units cheap and easy to replace? i heard they're by the filter.....i hope it's just the oil pressure sensor
Robby1870
well, in '88 the springs they used in the oil pumps were know to not give high pressure. The revised the spring in '90. Brian can talk more on this subject. But, I think 2.8/3.1Ls only require like 11-13psi@1100rpm.
Brian P
If it stays at 3 bars during hot idle, that's actually within spec for '88-89 (provided your gage is accurate, 3 bars is about 15psi) I would replace the sensor. They're next to the oil filter, and there's a special socket you'll need, OR just grab the base of it with vise grips or adustable pliers (ehk) just don't hit the positive terminal on the starter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 93CutlassSupreme
thanks....i assume the filter has to be removed? i haven't checked my manual yet is this socket easily avaiable? obviously i've never looked for it.

GOT2B GM
The exact same thing happens to my 87 Z24, 2.8MPFI, 282. When its at full operating temp idling, the oil pressure drops to 1-2 bars on the digi dash, and the odd once in a while the Check Gages light comes on cause it dips below the last bar. So, does this issue warrant the oil pump being replaced, or is it nothing to worry about??

Brian P
what kinda info do you need about it?
cutlsp
mine the problem is when the oil get warm it becomes THIN and the oil pressure drops. the fact of the matter is the 2.8 oil pumps are not as good as the 3x00 oil pumps. so the oil pressure will seem to drop once it reaches operating temperature. 93CutlassSupreme
what kinda info do you need about it? location, tool required to change it, the whole procedure
Brian P
I'll get you the tool part # tomorrow. Look in most specialty tool aisles in pepboys, autozone etc you'll find it. From there it's screw off, screw on. It's literally next to the oil filter, it helps to remove it but with the right tool, you won't need to.
