Getrag 282 problem

trans problem with my new car.

'88 CS 2.8 5-speed, so 282, right?

anyways, all gears are fine except 5th. on it's own while driving, the shifter will pop out of 5th gear and into neutral. sometimes it will run fine in 5th for 10 or 20 minutes, but it will pop out of gear eventually. it takes a few tries to get it back into 5th without it just popping out again.

doesn't do this in any other gear.

anyone have an idea of what's wrong? do i need a trans?

Maybe a bad 5th gear synchro?

Kevin, does 5th gear grind when shifting from 4th to 5th? any other problems at all? i would check & change the fluid (2.1 quarts of GM Syncromesh) and go from there.

5th gear doesn't grind when shifting from 4th to 5th.

1st and 2nd are fine, 3rd and 4th make a whining noise, but the car drives fine in those gears.

how bad is it to change the fluid? i changed the fluid on the 4T60 on my '93, never done a manual before

what rpm do you usually shift at? i've been shifting around 2500 and the car really bucks sometimes going into 2nd and 3rd....maybe i'm lugging the engine sometimes?

My friend's Saturn used to do this. We couldn't figure it out until we took the console apart.. there was trash in the shifter preventing it from fully sticking in 5th. We cleaned it up and it worked perfectly until his brother ran it into a parked car.

RIP 95 SL1.

yeah it sounds like you may be lugging the engine a little. IIRC i shifted into 2nd gear at around 3500 RPM going about 20mph (i could be a little off; it's been awhile since i've driven the car). fwiw cruising on the highway @ 75mph in 5th gear i would be at ~2700 RPM.

the whining noise may be a differential going south...check the fluid it's easy! and the 282 does have a drain plug....replacing the fluid is cake so long as you have long funnel.

my service manual says bad shift cables and shift linkage can cause slipping out of gear, along with bad shift forks and input gear retainer

any way to tell for sure if i need shift cables or linkage? how bad are these things to replace?

I know my uncle's old Toyota Celica GT-S had to have 5th gear replaced...same symptons as you..driving along and pops outta gear..

I'm not sure about replacing the fluid..but if you have to pump oil into the tranny from under the car..make this and it be much easier..especially if you can't pour the oil into the tranny easily from underneath:

Okay, scroll down to step 4 about making the pump..(this has to do with changing oil on an RX-7 but the pump you can make is generic to pump the oil into the ranny if needed.

what did he pay for that?

i'm really hoping this isn't an internal trans problem

I've heard of shifters popping out of gear from a misadjusted shift fork and linkage. Look for those since they are free repairs.

And what did happen to the colorado?

I'll check my repair manual after I get home from school for you if someone else hasn't by the time I get home. Or I can just scan the pages for you if you want me too

you cannot adjust the shifter cables, just make sure they are tightened down to the cable hold-down bracket on the transmission, the shift levers on the transmission, and of course the shifter itself underneath the center console.

as far as shift fork adjustment i have no idea?

nah they are easy to replace. obviously you'd need to pull up the carpet and pull them through the floor/firewall, but that's the hardest part.

What kind of shape are the lateral shift cable bushings in? When I got my cutlass one bushing was gone and one was really bad. Now I don't remember it causing it to pop out of gear, but it made it kinda hard to shift sometimes.

If they are bad you could try and get some booger bushings (there's a thread around here somewhere). Not sure if they'll work on a 282, but it's worth a try.

EDIT: Here's that thread.
