1990lumina
Okay, my Lumina has been doing this ever since I've owned it..it's never bothered me but I just wanted to know if it is normal. It has a 3.1 V6 and 4T60 transmission. I park on the driveway that might be at a 15 degree angle into the garage. So when I pull in I slow down with the brakes..but usually I slow down too much and when the car eventually stops it will start to roll backwards while still in Drive. If I just tap the gas it will lurch forward and this is usually all I need to get into my parking spot on the driveway. Any ideas why the car will go backwards while in Drive? Is it normal? As I said it doesn't bother me...except I just wanted to know if the tranny is screwed up or not - it's done this since I've owned it (6-7 months). I know my dad's Taurus if you put it into Drive it holds..and it will start to drive the car up the driveway at idle speed..so this is why I question my car rolling backwards. Thanks! - Jeff L. TeeJay3800
Every auto car I've ever owned has rolled backwards in Drive when on an incline. If that counts for anything......
HokemBokem
Yea I think mine holds steady on a normal driveway? Ill have to test it out today before I got to work.

THe_DeTAiL3R
Sometimes mine will roll backwards, other times not.. depending on the incline.
RacerX
On a mild incline, mine will creap forward. It takes a fairly steep incline for it to roll backward. My g/f's 2000 Regal LS will roll backwards on even the slightest incline.
Darksyde
Mine does the same thing.....it's cool though....get on a steep incline let it roll back a bit then stomp on it.....nice sick little smoke show....

HokemBokem
Oh it is....'cept tires don't appreciate it.... Yeah, and the trans too. Yea I was about to say the same thing. Doing that kind of shit is what fucks things up.
Darksyde
Oh it does? It's not like a N drop. I mean it's not like i'm going WOT while its cruising backwards. Besides i stopped doing that stuff anyhow. Seens how i can just slam it from a stop and it will smoke the tires anyhow.
Tru2Chevy
Mine will do this on an average to steep hill if the tranny is cold, but once everything is warm it will tend to creep forward. Someone told me it had to do with the specs of the tq converter, but I'm not sure exactly what it is. - Justin
GnatGoSplat
Yes, it does this because of the torque convertor and idle speed. The torque convertor just has a fluid coupling, so it can slip there - and it's supposed to. That's why the engine doesn't stall when you have your foot on the brake with the tranny in gear. It's also why auto transmissions are less efficient. If the idle speed is higher, the car will creep forward faster.
