Tear in Inner Constant Volicity Boot! Anyone Else have this?

I was changing my Oil, and I noticed a crap load of grease on my front frame brace right below the drive axle. So I investigated it after changing my oil and the inner constant volicty boot has a tear somewhere in it and is letting grease come out and its spraying grease all over in that area when it spins! Has anyone else had this go out before?? Please comment on it and what might have cause, and how much it will probably cost to fix thanks!

Yeah....it happens a fair bit.

At this point you have two options..........

#1....replace boot and repack with grease. About $35.

#2...replace CV shaft....about $55-$65.

Prices of course assume you are doing the work and that the joint is currently not "clicking".

yeah...like they've said, make sure its got grease in it still...and if its not making any noises and the grease isnt all "GRITTY" then i'd replace the boot...otherwise you might wanna just replace the whole thing...

It would probably be easier (and less messy) to just replace the entire joint. Since it's torn who knows how long the thing might last now that it's been exposed.

1988 Cutlass had this happen to both outers. The grease was contaminated and became completely black (it should be green when uncontaminated). Being poor at the time, I just took them both apart and cleaned/flushed them out completely with either alcohol or lacquer thinner. Then replaced the boots with fresh new grease. Everything was fine after that.

I think I paid $20 per boot, they came with clamps. I think the clamp tool was $10 or 20, but I already had it from replacing boots on an old Renault I had.

For me it just cost a total of $40 or so. If you pay it done, I'd guess around $150.

Thanks alot for the help guys! It comes down to it that i can get the whole new trans axle for $65, and it I can get that quicker then the $50 boot from GM no where else shows a listing like autozone murrays and napa, which is odd, but they claim its differnt for the GTP! Im just gonna have my dad's buddy install it because he can do it for a like $20 more then what it would cost for parts and special tools! So im gonna go that route and it saves me time, and it has lifetime warranty so if the boot ever gets a rip again I get a whole new trasnaxle for free!!!! Thanks
