Auto trans trouble. Need help

First off, i wanna say I'm glad I've finaly found a site for these cars.

Anyways, I've got an 89 grand prix with a 2.8 and I'm having a little trouble with it. My sister was driving it and the the tranny fluid got a little low. It got to the point where it wasn't shifting properly. So we put some fluid in it and now its acting up.

It will shift into 1st and 2nd like normal, but when it goes into 3rd theres nothing. Just like putting it in neutral. Same thing if you manualy shift it, however if you run it up to 50 mph in 2nd and then shift to OD it will engauge overdrive and run like normal until it downshifts into 3rd.

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? The fluid is a red and not burned. I'm stumped. Thanks.

Welcome to the site

Well it seems like your tranny is burnt . Change the fluid and the filter , just in case . Then if it doesnt work , time for new tranny : |

throw in a bottle of lucas trans additive and see if it helps, if it does, change your fluid/filter and use another bottle of lucas in it. If it does not help, you will be in need of a transmission rebuild or replacement.

Additives should never be used.......a transmission is designed to operate on plain old Dexron III....not with who knows that is in that additive. If it won't work with ATF, it won't work at all.

Now, you said the fluid was low. Did you fill it to the proper level? How much fluid did it take? Do you know the proper way of checking ATF fluid (trans warm, engine at idle)?

I say double check your fluid level and then we'll go from there. But it sounds like something go screwed up. The transmission might not have to be replaced or even pulled......maybe it just needs a solenoid or something.......but odds are a set of clutches or a band got fried.

Thanks for the replies, even if its not what I wanted to hear.

Canada: yep. engine was at idle, trans was warm, and shifted through all the gears. Fluid was right where it should be, looked like it just came out of the bottle, and had no odors. Thats whats throwing me for a loop as I've had autos go out before and every time the fluid was brown and usualy stunk. Not so with this trans.

Are there any sensors or connections that could cause this problem? I really don't want to pull the tranny cause I've never done that before with a FWD car but I'm not gonna junk the car because its only got 75,000 miles on it. I'll have to see what kind of prices I can find.
