1990lumina
Outlined in red, (omit the green lines) what is this hose? The other day I was checking my oil and at the bottom of this hose on the valve cover around the seal of the hose it was wet with oil? Just wondering what this hose is? The other end is connected into the intake rubber hose deallie. - Jeff L.

1990lumina
Hey no problem, you answered the question..I just wanted to know what the hoses purpose in life was and why the seal at the bottom would be wet with oil..thanks! Hijack away! lol
HokemBokem
Yea I see ricers put mini cone filters from like checker on the engine. I never knew what it did either.
GTPrix
That is the front valve cover that the hose is going to. Sice there is oil inside of the valve cover, this is why you see oil around the seal. The filter that some people put on it is a valve cover breather. Jcrow
It makes a vacuum in the crankcase to help the rings seal better, but also sucks out gas fumes which will ruin oil. It also sucks in gunk which is why your throttle body and intake are dirty.
dmhoo29
Actually, that hose is primarily used for vaccum,it sucks. But I have one on my 95 corsica and on one end it attatches to the vaccum on the back of the motor then goes to the front valve cover where it is attatched to a PVC valve.I know for a fact,if thing comes loose or you remove it,your car will idle high, and when you start it,it will be hard to start. If you go to the dealer, you can replace the whole assembly for less than 25.00 or try and find one at your local wrecking yard. You need to replace the pvc valve, which you will need to get from the dealer, because the parts store will not have the little plastic elbow that the pvc valve is attatched too. And by experience if you try to remove it it will break off.TRUST ME. so just slide the pvc valve+elbow peice off and put the new pvc valve in.That should stop the oil from gathering around the rubber gromets. His is a 3.1, and yours is a 3100, so it's a little different.
EurosportZ34
i hate how many things GM likes to stick onto those stock intake systems, i remember my Z34 had one that went around the back side of the engine and the damn thing kept on coming unhooked in the back
1990lumina
Lol, you think one hose is bad...check out my RX-7 lol. Christ, to take the air cleaner assembly off you have to disconnect about 10 small little rubber hoses, and if they don't get up bad properly you're screwed lol. Consider yourself lucky - Jeff L. pitzel
Yes, its just a crankcase breather. No point in trying to eliminate it -- if theres a lot of gunk accumulating, thats just a symptom of using crappy oil. The oil vapours that get sucked through it help keep some of the parts in the throttle body lubricated I would imagine. After all, the throttle body is a heated device that undergoes movement, so if it doesn't get a small amount of lubrication, bad things could happen.
