slick Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 What all wiring are you looking to replace? The heavy guage cable that carries the power? If it makes any difference, I replaced the whole engine bay wire harness in my car, with the engine still in, in about 1 days. Me and few members here can pipe in on this. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 First off, what car and what motor? The large positive wire on the alternator should run to a fusible link on the starter, not the battery. The big "lug" on the starter acts as a distribution block (the main positive battery cable runs directly to the starter.) I would imagine that if you were to run a new alternator wire, you could run it on top of the motor down to the starter (provided you don't have a 3.4.) Just be sure you tuck it up into the wire looms that run over the motor... Quote
MoTox8410 Posted February 24, 2005 Author Report Posted February 24, 2005 sry it is a 93 Z34 so the lq1 so i am wanting to check probally replace that wire so can i do it without doing anything but putting it on the jack?? Quote
slick Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Which wire??? The fused linked wire that runs from the alt. to the starter? If so, it shouldn't take you more than an hour or two to pull the old one out, and fish the new one in. Quote
MoTox8410 Posted February 24, 2005 Author Report Posted February 24, 2005 the starter to the battery i think if the fused link blew what would be the syptoms<<no charging?? Quote
slick Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 the starter to the battery i think if the fused link blew what would be the syptoms<<no charging?? Yep, you wouldn't get a charge, or so I think thats how that works. I'm pretty sure auto parts stores sell cables with fused links in them. Quote
MoTox8410 Posted February 24, 2005 Author Report Posted February 24, 2005 so u can do all this without having to do anything but put it on jackstands??? Quote
slick Posted February 24, 2005 Report Posted February 24, 2005 Yep. To get to the alt. wiring though, i would recommend taking off the passenger side wheel, and reach your hand through the opening(granted your arms and hands are as small as mine) and undo the wiring like that. Quote
