Seafoam

I remeber a thread about this a LONG time ago but I have some questions about it for those who have used it before.

I know you can use it three different ways 1. Put in gas tank 2. suck in vacuum lines and I cant remember the 3rd. I was wondering what the best method of use is and I was wondering where the vacuum lines are located that you have to use to suck up the bottle?

Yank the large hose off of the brake booster and dump it in there (while it's running.)

Would you happen to have a pic of this vacuum line?

edit: oh and also what does it clean when you suck it up the vaccum lines? The whole upper intake?

Sorry no pic. Just look at the large (circular) brake vacuum booster (it's what the master cylinder is mounted to) and there's one very large (like 3/4" in diameter) rubber hose that runs directly to the intake manifold. Yank it right off at the booster cause there's no clamp holding it on...

So I do this while the cars running then shove that hose into the bottle of seafoam and let it suck it up and then replace the hose and go for a drive?

3rd way is to add a 1/2 bottle or so to your Oil.....I use Seafoam all the time and its the only thing I use....I use a can once a month or so....I buy it when its on sale around here 2 for $5 and I pick up about $30 worth or so....and yes adding to your oil works nice...just read the bottle it will tell you how to use it...

You can also get SeaFoam for your Tranny its called Transtune and it works Great ....

Allright cool. Im still just a little confused how to suck it up the vacuum line. I went out to my car and saw the huge hose going to the master cylinder. Now do I take that hose off and stick it in the bottle of seafoam while the car is running? I also heard the car might bog out and shut off. THen what do i do just start it back up and let it keep suckin?

you might have to work the throttle with your hand, thats what i had to do when it wanted to die with Gm top engine cleaner. It smokes like hell but works great. I know it says its safe, and many people do it, but i would keep that shit out of my oil JMO not trying to start a flame war.

You might want to get a small funnel and stick it in the hose and pour it in the hose, so your hose isn't covered in that shit. Hope this helps and take pics of when it is starting to smoke. Remember it might die and thats fine just try to start it again. The thing is to try and not let it die. Good luck Jay

What kind of shit did you notice after using seafoam?

The Seafoam smokes too....

You don't really "suck" it into a vacume line cause more than likely, the engine will stall if you try and do it all at once. I think the can said to add 4 oz into one of the vacum lines. I did this in two different vacume lines so that the seafoam takes a different path in the intake. That way you really are are cleaning more than just 3 valves/cylnders. I used the MAP and some other vacume line on the upper plenum... I can't remember which. I used a syringe to inject it into the lines (less messy). After that I turned the car off for 15-20. Then when you start it again, you will see it smok'n good then.... works good. 8)

When I did it with mine, I used the brake booster line and PINCHED it shut almost all the way, taking it out every few seconds entirely. Believe me, that line will suck the bottle dry in like 2 seconds, and I don't see that being good for the engine either. You want to do it nice and slow; it'll give it time to work and won't nearly flood the engine. As others said though, you're going to have to open the throttle a bit every second or so to keep it from dying. Believe me, it's going to want to die.

Well I picked up a bottle yesterday for $4 bucks. It says your only supposed to put a 3rd of the bottle in the vacuum line and all the rest in the tank or oil I put mine in the tank. In a couple hours im going to go out and let my 3800 suck up some of this shit

Well I just put a third of the bottle in the master cylinder vacuum line. The engine was sputtering and revving all wierd when I took that hose off. I put the seafoam in let it sit for 5 min then started her up and no smoke :? So I went for a little 5 min drive and still no smoke

Maybe my top end just isint very dirty becasue of the recent engine rebuild? Anyway hope it did something.

ok, so what exactly does this stuff do for the engine that would warrant all this fuss with injecting it into the engine?

If you take off your upper intake (don't do this just to look, do it on your next repair) , you would see the intake is covered in a brown greasy sludge, (if you have high miles). The Seafoam helps to clean that up a bit.

If you have a recently rebuilt, or a newer engine, this product wouldn't help, accept maybe as a preventitive measure. 8)
