Digital360
Well first off I would like to say Hi to all the members, I just got my self a 1995 Z34, had the car for a few days and I love it. I have never been able to keep a car stock (my last car was a 1993 Mazda Protege and I swapped in the V6 Engine from the Probe/MX6). I was looking at doing the 3.8 S/C swap from GTP/Regal/Bonneville. After speaking to my friend about this he sent me this link: http://www.angelfire.com/ca2/34Performance/dohc.html If I read and understood right the 3.4 DOHC engines in the early 90's prodcued 281HP, but due to the automatic tranny not being able to support the power it was detuned to ~215hp. First I would like to know if this a myth or the truth? Secondly I would like to know what was done to "detune" this engine, and what needs to be done to get the car back to HP #'s in the high 200's? And thirdly what tranny will be needed to support the power, I figured the GTP/Regal/Bonneville (S/C) tranny would be ideal, and am wondering if its a hard fit into my Z34, any other comments or ideas for modifications would also be appreciated! I just figured it would be cheaper to get this engine's #'s back to where they were suppost to be than swapping in a L67!
GP1138
Another link you might be interested in is http://www.60degreev6.com. They're nuts about the 3.4DOHC there, and there are a lot of knowledgeable people on both forums. The L67 (3.8 Supercharged) swap is nice, but in-depth and expensive. I daresay you'd have more fun tuning your 3.4DOHC. Someone to talk to about the 3.4 would be Aaron on these boards. That's his handle and his name. A site for the L67 swap: http://www.l67swap.com Edit: Oh yeah. Welcome to the madness!!!

Don't believe anything from it, it is misinformed incorrect bullshit. We now know so much more about this engine and what makes it perform, thanks in part to many people, including the short runner intake guy, TimG, Ben, Pocket rocket, and so many more. (I'd like to think I could be in this list one day). So don't even bother clicking, he is wrong in so many ways. It was 275-285hp, and it was dropped down to 200-215 becuz GM didn't want a FWD Lumina beating their 6-speed, V8 Corvettes. Plain and simple, a 285hp Lumina would OWN a 265hp Vette. They can build auto trannies, that was merely an excuse. Hell they would have increased power later on, especially in 97 when using the 4T65e if that was the reason. It is myth and truth. That hp can be achieved, but not with computer tuning. IMO, 275hp is not possible N/A with the stock manifolds, especially in a configuration sold by GM and warrentied. You can, and I would consider it, swap in a 4T65e from a L67 car. I would do this FIRST if I had an auto. You can get great shift kits, limited-slip diffs, and 4000rpm stalls for cheap, plus it will last you a long time. It is a good tranny. As for getting the HP back up, you have an auto, so you will want mostly midrange power, with top end. For my manual cars, I want all top end. Basically headers, a new intake manifold, and cams and you can be sitting at 300hp easily. But the only headers ever made were mine, and they won't fit an automatic car. They aren't perfect, but they are close and the best out there as of now. As for intake manifolds, nobody seems to think I can do it, but just wait. This summer I will be selling a new intkae that utilizes 6 independent throttle bodies, each at 48mm. Runner length will be greatly lowered, RPM power range should be from 4000-7500, with minimal low and midrange losses. Other than this, hopefully I'd like to make new manifolds someday, that replace the upper and lower intakes, and shorten the runner length a bit to use harmonics. But this will be expensive for the buyer, and I don't think there would be a lot of interest. As for cams, there are a few companies who have offered, but no one has any idea on what specs to use, so for now it is adjusting your current ones (easy on 94-95 motors). Hope this helps!
