Robby1870
My old 92 made the same whine and it was a STRONG tranny. Dont worry about it. Why are you putting it manually into 1 anyway?
TeeJay3800
Why are you putting it manually into 1 anyway? I was wondering the the same thing! Mine also whines when the shifter is in 1st.
digitaloutsider
I think all 4T60's (at least the Chevy ones) do that.
ZeroDCX
My 3.8 Regal does that also.
THe_DeTAiL3R
Through about 40 runs down the track with my 1988 GP (4T60) I found no advantage of driving in 1st. Put it in 2nd and hold it there till the power runs out..
JoroCorona
I put my Lumina in 1st and powerlocked it at the track. The 4T60E shifts into second anyways, but I noticed it shifts about 200-300 rpms higher then normal. However, my 4T60E doesn't whine in first. av8n
Although mine does not whine, when you go into manual 1st ,the fluid pressure is increased from 90 psi to about 170 psi. I would think, ideally, you should not hear a thing.
maybe2fast
when the trans is put into first it activates additional clutches. I had a 1990 Lumina and it was slipping in first , but when you would put it in manual first it locks more clutches (per trans guy at work) that sound is the pump (sc sound) my 1990 never did that.
