89Cutlass
In going to change my tranny pan gasket and filter today and am wondering how much fluid to put in from a gasket change. Is there a way to find out what type of tranny i have an 89 olds cutlass supreme 2dr 4speed auto with /o.
Whiskey River
Is it a 3 speed auto or a 4 speed auto?
89Cutlass
4speed with O/D
Whiskey River
Since it is an '89 then they most likely still refer to the tranny as the 440T4, now known as the 4T60. I dropped the pan on my 4T60 and replaced the gasket and filter, took 6.5 quarts to fill it back up. I think the half quart was due to my arm tiring before tightening all the bolts and not getting a couple of them as tight as I should. The 6 quarts should at least bring it up to the low mark. Also be sure you clean off the magnet in the pan. If it has alot of shavings hooked to it then you may have some serious tranny problems heading your way. 89Cutlass
It took 7 quarts to fill it up. AS for the magnet there were some shavings but not alot at all very few to be specific. Â thanks for the info

Guest Anonymous
The only time I changed mine the magnet was almost double it's original size cause of the metal shavings. I also found chunks of white plastic in the pan. I figured my tranny was going, going, gone... It shifted real hard and downshifted even harder. Found out it was due to the dogbones being shot allowing everything to jerk around. Got some poly ones and it shifts good for 175,000 miles. SleeperRed90TGp
Don't forget to add at least two quarts of extra fluid to the 4t60 tranny after it's full. Where I had my tranny beefed up and overhauled they said that years ago there was a gm bulliten stating that we will get better longivity by adding three quarts above the fill mark. Mine is about 7/8 inch above the full line and has been that way for four years. I gotta change mine someday. They also recomended synthetic fluid. Expensive!! 89Cutlass
Ive always been scared to overfill my tranny beacuse i had a ford mustang one time and overfilled it by about 3 quarts and blew like every seal in it had to scrap it after that.. BlackSunshine
I would make 100% sure before I add the extra fluid. I remember your Mustang fiasco there 89 and you don't want a repeat. But that could be the case so tread easily and skate straight.
Guest TurboSedan
i have heard that there is no problems overfilling the tranny, since the excess fluid will come out of the tranny vent tube anyway. joshua
Brian P
I have it overfilled by only 1/2 quart and I never had any problems with "slipping" on sharp turns
nerfbars
I have the same car. In 89 the 4spd trans is a TH440 "overdrive", the 3spd is a TH125. To change the fluid and filter mine has always taken about 5 to 6 quarts.

Brian P
well, the one I saw was dark blue, full bra up front, raised lettered tires but it had the 15" olds wheels. I love the 88-91 cutlasses and 90-94 Lumina euros with raised letters, it looks so badass
ismellrealbad
you hav a raised lettering fetish. raised lettering is only for boxy RWD cars that are fast
