What the hell is that engine noise?

Kind of a rattling sound from the engine bay during any acceleration. Sound familiar to anyone?

exhaust heat shield? What car, engine, etc.?

Yeah that sounds like the noise my 88' was making. For me it was a sign that there was enough corrosion to loosen it and eventually the pipe coming off the exaust manifold and down to the catalytic failed.

 

This was on a 2.8L

'95 GTP. My first thought was exhaust related, because it only happens when you get on the gas at all.

Look at the heat sheild on the cat. The easiest way to fix it, if it's loose it to put a really big hose clamp (wormgear clamp, or several put together) around the sheild and tighten until it doesn't rattle anymore. Mazda and Ford actually did this as part of a service campaign on Explorers and Navajos.
