f_399 Posted February 7, 2005 Report Posted February 7, 2005 I am currently usine ROyal Purple with K&N filter. I am up for an oil change, should I switch to AmsOil or stay with Royal Purple? Also for the filter, is K&N good for both RoyalPurple and AmsOil? I know its an old topic but i recently read an article and AmsOil was #1 and RoyalPurple was only at #7 Quote
TeeJay3800 Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Where's the "neither" option? Quote
f_399 Posted February 8, 2005 Author Report Posted February 8, 2005 you can just say neither and saywhat you recommend Quote
sonyman87 Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 My opinion on motor oil.. 1st Switching oils ends up mixing oils probably not a good idea.. try to stick with one brand. 2nd. if you are using synthetic and you have to drain the pan every 3k miles Dont buy synthetic! If your motor has so much blowby that your oil is crap after 3k miles then its cheeper to run petrolium based oil, just change it when needed. The charts saying which synthetic oil is better is laughable.. They all have their good points AND even the worst brand is still top notch. Quote
BIGBULS Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 I use Mobil 1 as it's the only easy to find PAO (Polyalphaolefin...........aka a TRUE synthetc) Group IV on the market. Castrol Syntec, Q-State Synthetic, Valvoline Synpower etc are all Group III's (a hydrocraked fossil oil) nowdays and have neither the cold flow, nor the temp resisitance of a Group IV. My vote is to use whichever Group IV floats your boat......... Motul Royal Purple Mobil 1 Redline Amsoil Any of the above are good choices.......just pick which meets your budget, and/or which is readily available in your area. As for your filter, there is NOTHING wrong with the K&N. It is in fact, very well made and a close relative of the Mobil 1 filter (both are made by Chapion Labs)............the main difference is that the M1 is biased towards filtration, the K&N towards flow (for instance, *I* think it's probably a bad idea to use the M1 in winter if you are not ALSO using a synthetic oil.....it'd likely cause a bit of a pressure spike until the oil warmed up). Another pretty good filter is the AcDelco UPF series (Ultraguard)...........good luck finding them locally though...........your best bet there is to get them by the case from GMpartsdirect. Quote
BIGBULS Posted February 8, 2005 Report Posted February 8, 2005 Also..............as for oil change intervals...............I have one thing to say: It all depends on how (and where) you drive. I beat the shit out of my car on a consistant basis (if it doesn't see the 7500rpm redline [7750rpm limiter] at least a dozen times a day, something is weird), so *I* change my oil and filter (M1 oil, M1 filter..switching to K&N filter soon though) every 2500-3500 miles. My girlfriend on the other hand, drives her Neon R/T much nicer (it normally only has the tach sunk into the red (7K redline, 7600rpm limiter) when I drive it.............so SHE changes HER Mobil 1 (oil AND filter) every 5-6K miles. Grandpa Bob...shit, he could probably go 10K +............. It all varies from person to person (obviously, living in Nevada is going to be different than Alaska too) Quote
CuttySup Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 Why are you using such expensive oil when your run of the mill Valvoline or Mobil 1 will do just fine? How much do you spend on oil changes? Quote
f_399 Posted February 9, 2005 Author Report Posted February 9, 2005 $50 full service oilchange @3,000 they change the oil filter and make sure the oil levels are good, they will add if needed @6,000 next oil change basicaly $25 per 3,000 miles plus K&N Filter Quote
Jeorge Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I use MaxLife in my STE 152,000 miles not going to switch to a syn... Mobil drive clean in my Grand am its just a N body do not worth putting syn in ... how ever when my STE gets the motor rebuilt I will only use mobil 1 Quote
luminator94 Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 I've always used Mobil 1 convential oil with AC Delco filters. Aaron Quote
digitaloutsider Posted February 9, 2005 Report Posted February 9, 2005 \ said: \ said: SuperTech! There's nothing wrong with SuperTech oil or the filters. The oil is (usually) now refined/manufactured by Mobil and the filters are made by Champion (the same people that make STP and AC Delco's filters. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ Quote

pitzel Posted February 13, 2005 Report Posted February 13, 2005 Just run the new Mobil-1 Extended Performance 5W-30 and change oil and filter every 15k miles. Fully guaranteed by XOM for 15k miles/1 year, and there is plenty of oil analysis experience to back that up. If you are particularly adventurous, you could probably extend that interval to 25,000-35,000 miles since the 3100/3400/3.1 line of engines are notoriously easy on oil (so long as there isn't any coolant leaks).
