question about the bands in a auto trans

I just finished overhauling my 4t60e today. I replaced all the seals, clutches and steels and the molded pistons in everything except the 2nd clutch ( I forgot ). I did not replace the bands because they all still had some kind of a part number printed on them, I assumed the were still ok.

My problem is the trans functions ok when cold but when it gets hot it starts to slip in first. Does this sound like a bad band ? Any help is appreciated.

Drive Range - First Gear

In this range, the converter is filled, the forward clutch is applied and the transaxle is in Drive range-first gear.

With selector in Drive position, the manual valve is positioned to permit line pressure to enter the drive passage. Drive oil then flows to the following:

Forward clutch.

Governor assembly.

1-2 shift valve.

1-2 accumulator valve.

Drive oil is directed to the forward clutch through an orifice where it acts on the clutch piston to apply the forward clutch.

Drive oil is directed to the 1-2 shift valve, and then to the 1-2 accumulator valve and is regulated to a pressure called 1-2 accumulator pressure. This pressure is directed to the 1-2 accumulator piston to act as a cushion for the band apply on a 1-2 shift.

Drive oil at the governor assembly is regulated to another variable pressure which is called governor pressure. Governor pressure increases with vehicle speed and acts against the 1-2 and 2-3 shift valves and the 3-2 control valve.

Doesn't say anything about a band there, must not be used in 1st.

One question.........what does the transmission do while in D, 2, or 1? (Or however your selector is marked.)

Your forward band is okay.........because you said it only slips in first. Beings that its applied in all the forward gears (hence the name), it can't be.

Your 2/1 band is okay.........because its only applied while the selector is in 1 or 2. If it slipped only in manual 1 or 2....then this would become a possiblity.

Your reverse band is okay.......because, well.......its only applied in reverse.

Those are the only 3 bands in a 4T60-E.

This leaves clutches.

I'm looking at the input clutch. In OD, its only applied (and effective) in first gear. However, in D, its also applied (and effective) while the transmission is in third gear.

So......based on the information you gave........my guess is the input clutch is slipping. Being a bad set of clutches or something screwed up in appling side of things is going to require a tear down.

Your second clutch is not slipping......as its only applied in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th.

BTW......its not very often I get to have a decent discussion about transmissions with someone on the internet....kinda cool.
