tripowergto
How difficult is it to change the fuel pump in the fuel tank of this car? Can it be done reasonably at home on jackstands? Anyone have any good tips to make it easier? I assume there is no fuel tank access panel underneath the rear seat? Any info would be VERY appreciated as I have to do this outside in cold winter conditions and I'm not looking forward to it. Thanks!
Intlcutlass
I just did that on my 89 Cutlass , It's not that hard, but does take some time... Yes jackstands and a car jack is really all you need (other than the obvious wrenches). Undo the hoses, make sure you mark them which one went where. There should be 3 or 4 of them. Then there are two bolts that hold the straps in place. Undo the electrical connector from the sending unit to the body of the car. Then you should be able to wiggle the tank loose.... The locking ring for the sending unit.... You need a hammer and a flathead for that... GO SLOW. Tap that ring slowly and gently. Be carful pulling the sending unit out of the tank, because of the float arm. About a 2 hour project..... :alcoholic:
mfewtrail
Do you know for sure the the fuel pump is dead? There's a common problem w/ the fuel pump resistor on these cars.
DiscoStudd
The 97-03's have a "hatch" beneath the back seat cushion to make changing the FP easier, so dropping the gas tank is unnecessary...
tripowergto
The 97-03's have a "hatch" beneath the back seat cushion to make changing the FP easier, so dropping the gas tank is unnecessary... AWESOME INFO, THANKS!! My car(97 GTP) starts, runs for a few seconds, then dies. It will do this over & over again but will not continue to run unless I quickly feather/pump the throttle. I borrowed a fuel pressure gauge and with the key on pressure goes to 50PSI, once started the gauge gradually loses pressure until the car stalls around 5 PSI. I tried jumping the resistor through the fuel relay in the fuse panel and while the pump did continually run, the car still stalls. I have no codes flashing in the dash and I even unplugged the MAF and it still stalls so I'm out of ideas other then the fuel pump. Anyone know about what a fuel pump will cost? Justin
Dude you are going to get absolutely nowhere with a block of wood. You have to use a hammer and screwdriver or chisel.

J
Dude you are going to get absolutely nowhere with a block of wood. You have to use a hammer and screwdriver or chisel. i know you need a piece of oak and a hammer, done it a few times, works for me. Don't you think it's a little scary to be bangin 2 metal pieces together near a gas tank?>
GTPrix
At the shop I work at, the guy that always seemed to do FP jobs smokes....and he makes it a point to smoke WHILE he changes the FP. One time he looked over at me, and asked:"should I do it?" referring to dropping his cig into the open tank. He was later fired... Slade901
If you have to drop the gas tank, make sure you drain the fuel first. Just remove the fuel filter and then put a fuel gas can container on the fuel line coming from the gas tank and operate the fuel pump to drain the fuel until empty.
