GrimZ34
I know that there has been someone that has asked this before..and I did a surch on it and came up with a lot of b.s. My question is, what would be the best turbo as far as price and preformance for my 95 3.4dohc m.c. and would would i get it off of or where...? Thanks
slick
T04b 60 trim seems to be the best bet. There is one that is a better choice, but for the money, the one I'm going with is the best bet. There's plenty of places to get it from, just look. Also, what are you going to do about the rest of the engine?
GrimZ34
well for now im not doing nothing, But when it goes out on me im going to tear it all down and rebuild and clean it all up nice then add some preformance parts to stand up to the turbo, I'll prab. port and polish it and headers all that good shit. ill be awhile before I do all this work but im just geting an idea of everything I need... There's plenty of places to get it from, just look. Also, what are you going to do about the rest of the engine? I would highly suggest the T04E, NOT the T04B. The T04E 60 trim is what I'm using. The roughly equivalent T04B turbo is the T04B H3. It is much less efficient and has a design that is at least 10 years older. Expect to spend about $500-$600. I would look for the tangential style turbine housing- they're much more efficient. Other turbos to consider- GT35R (awesome, but $$), 60-1 (the T04 based one, not the T03 based Hi-fi), T4/T67, etc. All of these should provide a bit more performance, but will cost more. The GT35R should be the best of the bunch, quickest spool, most power, etc, but also will cost twice as much as the rest. I will probably upgrade to a GT35R one of these days... If you have any questions about the 95 Monte, feel free to e-mail me. I have done exactly what you want to do to the exact same car. http://www.cheapturbo.com (I bought my GT30R + lots of other parts here) http://www.atpturbo.com Cheapturbo seems to have high prices for the T04E, but is right on target for the rest. ATP turbo has the GT35R I would use... timg
Forgot to add. I have pics of the Monte on my CarDomain page (click my www button at the bottom of the post). Tim
slick
That was the turbo I was thinking of that would best work, the GT35R. Exactly as you said as the benefits, except that it is quite costly. The T04B is a much cheaper choice than the T04E, kind of another reason I am going for that one(especially since I will be investing a good amount of money into another 3.4 which I am picking up once I get moved into my new place this summer). It may be an older design, but it will work.
mfewtrail
Tim, what type of power levels would you say the T04E can support? I'm looking for something sized up for a DOHC that can support somewhere in the area of 450hp(flywheel/engine).
timg
The T04E should be able to do that pretty easily, but... you may be better off with a GT35R at that power level- it should spool faster and make more power with less boost. The Maxima guys have lots of experience with these very turbos on a similar engine. The GT35R they talk about seems custom- normal GT35R's don't come with ported compressor housings (GT30R's, GT37's, and GT40R's do though). PFI is a good shop... http://forums.maxima.org/forumdisplay.php?f=53 http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=361469 Tim
Canada
The new GT series is pretty cool......not that the line up it replaced was bad, they're just so much better. I would seriously like to get a GT, but I'm trying to keep this a somewhat low budget operation....it is a 14 year old car afterall. Realistically, I'm only building it to learn how to properly build a turbo kit for future use.....like a S2000. I'm looking at using a TO4B 62-1...here is a compressor map I made of it..... Drawn at 7k and 3k with 10 psi. To help find the mass air flow rates I assumed a VE of 80% and an air density of 0.076 lb/ft^3. The 60-1 is only a hair smaller....I might opt for this one in the end. Tim....cool pictures. How soon are you able to build boost? And how soon does full boost come on? I'm surprised you haven't cut a huge hole in your front bumper for that nice big intercooler. The 60-1 and 62-1 are great turbos. I know what you mean about not wanting to spend a lot of $$ on an old car. So far my Monte has cost me 4x less to turbo (excluding the blown tranny) than my S2000! I don't get full boost until 3500-4000 rpm in first gear. In higher gears, I can get full boost below 3000 rpm- usually around 2500 rpm. Lag from punching it is roughly 1-2 seconds depending on RPM and load. A BB turbo should help lag quite a bit. I don't have a huge hole cut in my bumper because my Monte is my sleeper car- a big intercooler would give it all away. Besides, the charge pipes and the intercooler outlet are always cool so I really don't need to do it from a performance standpoint. Canada
Thats cool.....your actually able to build boost at a somwaht low rpm considering you are using a fairly large turbo and a tiny exhaust. I understand what you mean on the sleeper end of things.....big intercoolers look just so gosh darn pretty. Any good street racing stories or videos? Did you pick up Maximum Boost by Corky Bell when you first started on your Monte? I have, and find it useful.

Even though it's only 2.5" from turbo back, it is fairly good since there's no cat and the mufflers are straight through. I have a nice big intercooler at the front of my Honda which is good enough for me. Street racing stories: I was in the Monte with 3 of my friends for Sturgis rally. We were getting on the interstate behind a C4 Corvette. I was right on his tail and I think he got a little mad that I was right there with him so he floored it. I floored it also and I gained on him for the entire trip from 50-80. We never got side by side to race because there were so many bikes. When I first got the Monte turbocharged(5psi non-intercooled), I raced a 2000+ Mustang and a Z28 Camaro (not sure if it was a LS1 or LT1). We lined up and I tried to brake torque to build boost- instead I bogged badly. The Mustand got a great launch and shot out two carlengths. The Camaro got one and so I was back at his bumper. A second or two later, my turbo spooled and by 35 I was side by side with the Camaro. By 45, the Camaro let off. By the time I hit 60 I was side by side with the Mustang. I held on just long enough to pull my nose out in front and then I had to let off since the road ended. A few weeks ago I was in the S2000 and was on my way home from the bars (I hand't drank in a few hours because my gf called). I saw a Red Toyota Supra turbo getting onto the interstate. I thought he would be a good run for me so I followed him up the onramp. We messed around a bit in town, but waited until the interstate was wide open to open it up. I got beside him and we both went from about 70. We were fairly even for a second or two and then he started pulling... I got him to pull over and it turned out that he had just bought the car in Michigan and was bringing it back to Oregon. The car had a T78 turbo and just about every mod in the books short of a built engine. His car had just put down 570 hp on low boost on pump gas and well over 700 on race gas with high boost! No Maximum boost for me. I probably should read it sometime. I do have the Bosch Automotive handbook though (bought it from the Society of Automotive Enigneers store). I also took a gas turbines class in college. We did quite a few compressor and turbine calculations and maps Tim

Yeah, Supras can really make some insane power on stock internals... I graduated from the University of Wyoming a year ago with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in math.
