OldsmoBeast
Okay... lets say I've been sick of not having a car to drive and I have way more important things to worry about than GMs CRAPPY designs...sorry fellas but the way some of the bolts on my engine are made and especially the way they're placed makes me want to light the whole damn thing on fire sometimes... So lets say I didn't really bother cleaning the mating surfaces between my head and my cylinder block, lets even go as far as to say there was some oil in some spots... lets say I threw a Permatorque gasket in there, put a bit of new engine oil on my new head bolts, put em in, torqued em up in their proper order (maybe not all completely evenly either, and maybe a tad more than 33ft-lbs+90 degrees), and called it a day. Lets say I did all this, and finished throwing everything back together (including my long-awaited 3400 intakes) and finished up tomorrow or the next day.... Can we assume that I'm going to be fucked? or what's going to come of this? HG leak? EDIT: I also forgot to mention...hopefully in 6 or 7 months, I'll get my university acceptances....that is very hopefully.... and my dad and I made a deal to buy me a new W-body or equivalent if and when that happens. So will this shit last me till then? Thanks! YK
Guest TurboSedan
i picked #2 only because i'm not really sure. i just did this today (you probably seen my other post). i was very very careful to remove any traces of old gasket material or anything else from the block surface. i spent alot of time getting the surface clean with a razor blade and Brakleen. the cylinder heads were resurfaced, so no problem there. i even ran a tap down each bolt hole and then turned the engine upside down on the engine stand and sprayed Brakleen into the bolt holes to clean/flush them out. just before i installed the new gaskets (i used a Permatorque gasket as well), i wiped down the block surfaces and cylinder head surfaces with a new clean rag and Brakleen. i didn't put anything on the new head bolts; not even motor oil (was i supposed to?). my Haynes manual says to put RTV on the threads and the underside of the bolt head, but that just seemed really wierd so i didn't do it. that's basically what i did to my 2.2L Turbo in my other car and everything turned out great. well anyways good luck
OldsmoBeast
I have no idea...haynes says RTV, the box that the bolts came in says oil, some people say nothing...i dunno...oil seemed kinda stupid to me personally...but whatever... my main problem was that I was having a bitch of a time getting the rear exhaust heat shield off so I couldn't get the manifold off, and in turn the head was attached...so thats mainly what motivated all of this...i was really frustrated. DaveFromColorado
I did a head gasket as a temp fix for a friend, I didn't even pull the intake manifold, I just pulled the exhaust manifold, the radiator, head bolts, and pushrods, slid the old gasket out, sprayed the new gasket with a thick coating of that liquid copper crap, slid it in place, dropped the head back down, threw it together, and put the new head bolts (with a little RTV on them because they do go into the water jacket) in and reassembeled the car, took a few hours one afternoon, and it hasn't started leaking yet. not the first time I've half-assed a head-gasket and seen it work for a good ammount of time. --Dave.
