White93z34
ok i'm working on a 89' GP that is the T engine (3.1) and states that its the 3.1 on the vin tag and emissions sticker. however the intake plenum says that its a 2.8. how do i find out if this really is a 2.8 or a 3.1? are there markings on the block? i have no idea if it ever has had an engine swap, i'd say that no it never has, but i could be wrong. GutlessSupreme
The VIN should be stamped or stickered on the block somewhere I think..
THe_DeTAiL3R
Hmm interesting... Most of the 89s I've seen (on the board and at the junkyard) have 2.8s in them. But I know they started the 3.1 that year too. Wonder if they put a 2.8 plenum on a 3.1 at the factory

mihela816
I don't think you could tell the difference between a 2.8 and a 3.1 by looking. You'll find out if you drive it.

He has an '89 Prix here, but it has what appears to be a 2.8 engine, even though the VIN reflects "T", as does everything else on the car. He needs some other way of knowing what it is other than the plenum.

Tru2Chevy
Well, the 2.8 and 3.1 use a different bore, right? If so, then just check the casting number on the block, they should be different. Of course, if it really is a 3.1, and someone has done at least an upper plenum swap, then who knows what else they screwed around with...... - Justin
Guest TurboSedan
no, the 3.1 is a stroked 2.8. they have the same bore.
