White93z34 Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 ok i'm working on a 89' GP that is the T engine (3.1) and states that its the 3.1 on the vin tag and emissions sticker. however the intake plenum says that its a 2.8. how do i find out if this really is a 2.8 or a 3.1? are there markings on the block? i have no idea if it ever has had an engine swap, i'd say that no it never has, but i could be wrong. GutlessSupreme Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 The VIN should be stamped or stickered on the block somewhere I think.. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 Hmm interesting... Most of the 89s I've seen (on the board and at the junkyard) have 2.8s in them. But I know they started the 3.1 that year too. Wonder if they put a 2.8 plenum on a 3.1 at the factory Quote
Robby1870 Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 The VIN should be stamped or stickered on the block somewhere I think.. Yeah, on the two spare 3.1L blocks I have, there's a T cast into teh side of teh block toward teh bellhousing end, front side I think Quote
GP1138 Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 This better not be some frankensteined engine. This car is gonna be in my posession very very soon.... :? Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 Yeah, on the two spare 3.1L blocks I have, there's a T cast into teh side of teh block toward teh bellhousing end, front side I think I do believe that "t" don't mean shit. http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24288 Quote
mihela816 Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 I don't think you could tell the difference between a 2.8 and a 3.1 by looking. You'll find out if you drive it. Quote

He has an '89 Prix here, but it has what appears to be a 2.8 engine, even though the VIN reflects "T", as does everything else on the car. He needs some other way of knowing what it is other than the plenum. Quote

digitaloutsider Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 Sorry. I'm too used to morons on this board Quote
Tru2Chevy Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Well, the 2.8 and 3.1 use a different bore, right? If so, then just check the casting number on the block, they should be different. Of course, if it really is a 3.1, and someone has done at least an upper plenum swap, then who knows what else they screwed around with...... - Justin Quote
Guest TurboSedan Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 no, the 3.1 is a stroked 2.8. they have the same bore. Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 Sorry. I'm too used to morons on this board yea we have our share of village idiots...and yes the bore is the same for the 3.1 and 2.8. Quote
TheCutlassGuru Posted January 5, 2005 Report Posted January 5, 2005 just pop off one of the heads and check the stroke haha Quote
