There is a little connector underneath the steering wheel. There *should* be a cover on it. Pull that cover off. When you pull it off, it should look like this(minus the red):

Take a paper clip and bend it so that the one end is in one red block, the other end is in the other red block.

Turn the car to the on position, but DO NOT START THE CAR!!

Just tell us how many flashes and pauses there are. For example: flash flash pause flash flash flash.

For each coded, it will run the sequece 3 times.

Hope this helps.

From the W-body FAQ's (god does ANYONE read the damn thing?):

http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17912" data-cite="\"http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=17912" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="12043" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic">
Q19. How do I check my ODB-I car for codes, and what do they mean?

A19Getting codes on the ODB-I cars is easy. Locate the ALDL connector and insert a paperclip as shown. The system will flash Code 12 three times to let you know it's working properly. Code 12 is **FLASH** [pause] **FLASH** **FLASH**. Hopefully from that you can see how the codes are read. The number of flashes before the pause is the first digit, and the number of flashes after the pause is the second digit. Choose your engine from this list to view the appropriate codes (right click, Save Target As/Save Link As):

2.2L I4 VIN "4"

2.3L I4 VIN "D"

2.3L HO I4 VIN "A"

2.5L I4 VIN "R"

2.8L V6 VIN "W"

3.1L V6 VIN "T"

3.4L V6 VIN "X"

3.8L V6 VIN "L"

I'm not manually copying those links over. For the complete FAQ's and links to the trouble codes, go here:

i did that, and all it blinked was flash pause flash flash and no others....was i supposed to do this after driving it?...or...?

If there was any codes, you would be able to receive them at any time. So, it appears that you have no codes.

I guess we will have to go from there.

Any smells? Gas mileage worse than normal? Anything noticeable different(besides for the sound) when this is going on?

gas mileage was 15 when i got the car, had a mechanic do a few fixes, took some parts off the airbox and now its roughly 20mpg, hasnt changed any. there arent any smells. i had the fuel pump replaced after it died and it still did the sound. it wouldnt be the filter is clogged, would it? the injectors were cleaned up a while back and the tb cleaned. i dont know the thermostat's condition, i've had the car about 1.5 years, should i change it? i want the radiator flushed, but i was told doing so could cause places that have leaked but dont coz of the gunk could leak again or somethin like that.....so i dunno...

Fuel filter is a possibility, but I'm guessing this popping should be doing it all the time if it was the filter...

Is it like a engine missing sound this "popping"? I know my Lumina starts missing every once in a while after idling for a long time.

Maybe plugs or something, but if it was missing bad enough shouldn't a SES light come on?

Or, maybe backfiring is the popping sound. When that happened on our 87 Suburban the two lol (wierd setup) injectors had to be replaced since that were leaking and plugged also lol...

just a few thoughts, but I'm probably totally wrong

It is simple but someone who doesn't know how to check codes it doesn't matter how simple it is... give him a break.

I'd get a compresson test, maybe check the plugs and wires. What is the "popping" sound like? Could even be exhaust related..

the popping sounds like it could be a bad spark plug too, overheating because the water pump isn't turning fast enough, creating too much heat in one cylinder, and where it's not creating so much of a knock condition, it's enough to cause a little bit of an issue...

just a thought tho.
