3100 to 3400 swap

95 BLKDOUT Drop Top

Recommended Posts

Just wonderin what all is involved in a 3100 to 3400 swap, is it a direct replacement or is there some things that need to be changed before i drop it in? The car 95 Cutlass Convertible. The original 3100 threw a rod so its done, i was gonna replace it with the 3400 out of a 2000 Grand Am GT. Will it work with no hidden road blocks?

biggest issue you'll face is the EGR. '95 vs '00 EGR mounts differently, but you can find a couple people selling adapters at http://www.60v6.com . Also the metal coolant line that installs into the lower intake manifold is different. The hole on the manifold isn't tapped out. So either tap it to match the '95 fitting, or get a '00 metal pipe w/ quick connect from GM (easier route)

If you want to use the 3400 throttle body, you may need to swap linkages. Thats all I can think of at the moment...

Yeah I just checked that site out. ITs cool, it tells you everything. i didnt think the 3400 would be that much different than the 3100. Are there any 1995 cars with the 3400? that seems to be my biggest problem, the EGR and then all the other misc. problems, i might just stick with the 3100 and just build it up to be a power house torque monster with beefier H.D. parts (3400 throttle body, performance heads, bigger injectors, ignition system, headers,) the reason im sayin this, I just called the place i get most of my engines from (pont 6000, 96 dodge sratus, 97 buick century all had thrown rods) has a 3100 for $350 but the 00 GA engine is on ebay for 900 bucks thats more than it would cost to buy, build, and drop in the 3100. Do The Math

well if you just want to keep it a simple drop-in, yet want the extra displacement, you could always just use your '95 intake and exhaust manifolds. That in a sense would make it a near direct drop-in, but it would be less powerful than it could be... but with that price difference, it's probably worth it to just put another 3100 in.

75K miles it came out of a 95 GP that was crushed by a fallin tree in the ice storm we just got 2 weeks ago, i hate cleveland. Im gonna get that motor and keep my fingers crossed that nothin else goes wrong. I just replaced my tranny in march, that brings up another question. Does the 4t60-e from the 3.4 DOHC engine have different gearing or somethin cuz it doesnt pull properly. I got a tranny from a 95 GTP in my 3100 cutty but 2nd gear feels a little too long for the engine to pull. wierd. back to the original subjuect. the new 3100 that im gettin, im gonna try to get it to 200 hp and about 220 lb-ft if its any way possible with the previously mentioned upgrades

um unless you put a turbo on it i don't think you're gonna get 200hp out of the 3100. RSM has a kit for like $5000 but that's way too much money for me.
