threefourtee
hi All I am searching hi and lo for info that I DID once see posted for a Getrag 282 regarding a H D rebuild ie for racing, and strengthening the casing and the tranny overall. Among other things it included welding some reinforcing metal in around the axleshaft exit points from the casing and other items. I didn't pay much attention at the time as I didn't have a 282. But now I have a 284 and I am planning on using it and I guess ABusing it, and I wanted to got thru that info again to see if it might be generic in nature and anything might apply to the 284. If anyone has any idea/info/input on this topic I would appreciate hearing from you; either here or PM or email. I will post whatever comes out of it for the general interest. TIA!! Intlcutlass
I don't think YOU can rebuild the 284. I am pretty sure you have to send that unit off for repair. Sorry for the bad news...
threefourtee
well that is the kind of stuff I am trying to figure out/find out. I have Rodney's info on the 282 rebuild (some of it) but that isn't exactly what I had seen (maybe 2 yrs ago? not sure) about reinforcing the case and so on for HD and racing use. Still good info. I'll buy his rebuild guide too. Do you know WHY it has to be sent off? Does it require special (as in REALLY unique/unusual) tools? Any specific info on that? The 282 doesn't if you are CAREful and methodical and have a good place to work. The 284 (what i have heard) is supposed to be a heavier duty version of the 282 - it IS bigger. I am starting to look for a 282 to take the two transmissions apart to compare; I have a line on a 284 that is ok for autopsy purposes so that will be the 'patient'. every little bit helps; I just prefer and hope that people don't guess is all. thanks gp
Intlcutlass
Anything you buy off Rodney is TOP QUALITY stuff. That guy is top notch. As for the 284....Accourding to this web site: http://www.drivetrain.com/transmanualrebuildkit.html The 284 is NOT Servicable....Thats all I have.... threefourtee
oh yeah those guys; yeah I got in touch with them a yr ago; their comment is that they don't service it; too few to make it worthwhile I guess. Remember that this trans came in only a few models in 3 yrs as an almost unusual option; and while the 282's for example, came in 3 years as well (87-89 incl from what I can tell) they came in a LOT of cars; and COMMON cars: Cavalier, Pontiac 6000, Beretta, Celebrity, Corsica, Cimarron, Firenza and of course the Fiero too, as well as maybe others. Lots of them. Think about how many of those cars are out there!?!!? So there is a market for them, obviously. I hope someone will come up with that 'strengthening' article for the 282, tho. And yup, Rodney has only the best quality stuff; that is clear.

You can buy the rebuild kit for the 282, then take it someplace to have it either ultrasonically hardened or cryogenically frozen. Either will yield the same results. Most places will claim anywhere from a 20-500% increase in strength : http://www.diversifiedcryogenics.com/ Here is a thread if interested. I think somewhere in there $3.50/lb was quoted for the process. If nothing else it's an option to strengthen the 282 and not have to use the 284 wich is apparently a bitch to get parts for.... http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/053287.html Lemme know if this helps.... slick
Are you going to be rebuilding it yourself or having a shop do it? I'm not even sure if there are multiple rebuild kits to choose from actually.
