rockyrunner99
as the weather started getting colder this fall, i noticed my gf's car was running cooler than ussual. i just assumed the thermostat was sticking open so i got a new one. Well that just seemed to make things worse. Then I thought it was air in the system. I have been working for weeks now to get the air out of the cooling system. Everday when she gets home from work i go out and open the beeders, mostly the one on top of the thermostat. i got air out for a while, but haven't for the last 4 or 5 days. It still wil not get over about 140 degrees. even in an hour drive. the only way to get it too warm up is if you let it idle. Even then is take a while. Yesterday i put some cardboard in front of the radiator, to help it warm up. i covered about 2/3 of the radiator. The lower 2/3 too, the part in the most airflow. it still only got to 130 degrees. ( the cardboard could have blown out from in front of the radiator, but not likely). A week or so ago, i checked the trouble codes in the computer there were two. 13 and 35. The oxygen sensor has been replace once on it, about 40-50,000 miles ago. The gas mileage hasn't went down drastically. she doesn't check it very often but her last tank she got 25-26 mpg with mostly highway miles. any help would be very appreciated. DiscoStudd
How does this affect the heater output? Did you notice a difference in heat output when you put the cardboard in front of the radiator? I'm thinking that if you get good heat, your temp gauge sensor might be screwed up and not the cooling system. You might want to have that coolant flushed as well. There could be some type of blockage in the system somewhere and a flush may knock it loose. Not to mention your coolant may be old and be in need of replacement... Dan94Z34
As the other guy said, how is the heat out put? Is the car low on water? Code 35 is the IAC circuit. Did you reset the computer when you replaced the o2 sensor by disconnecting the negative battery terminal?
rockyrunner99
the heat output still seems to be ok. Not as good as it used to be, but better that you would think for a car being only 140 degrees. this is my girlfreinds car, i am not sure if the cardboard effected the heat, i have not rode in it since. I am 99.99 percent sure that the temperature gauge and coolant temp sensor are both accurate. if i let it idle till it warm up the fans turn on at the right temp. no it is not low on water, there could be air stuck in the system still but i can't get anymore out. the coolant is new this fall. It wasn't completely flushed though. I am quite sure the computer was reset after the o2 sensor was replaced. it was done before i knew her, but she had a neighbor who is a GM mechanic do it, so i would think so! if it wasn't i think the batter has been disconected at some point by now. Dan94Z34
did you put a 195 degree thermostat in it? What kind did you use? A parts store one or one from the dealer. I am heard somewhere that you are supposed to use the thermostat fom the dealer instead of the parts store. I am not 100 percent sure though.
