2.8 vs 3.1...different flywheel or pressure plate?

apparantly the '88-'89 W-bodies with the 2.8/5-speed combo recieved a 9 & 1/8" clutch disc while the '90 3.1/5-speed recieved a larger 9 & 11/16" clutch disc.

now, i have a '90 flywheel and the larger clutch kit (i have Luk clutch kit part # 04-116), but is the flywheel and/or pressure plate different (size wise i guess) between the years? or is the clutch disc size itself the only difference? IOW if i bought a used flywheel from say an '88 Grand Prix from a local salvage yard would it work with my 9 & 11/16" clutch kit?

the 2.8 flywheel is smaller and has diffrent bolt patern than the bigger 3.1 flywheel.....

made that mistake when i ordered my SPEC Flywheel and Clutch..

dang...guess that means the 3.1 flywheel is rather hard to come by since it is '90 only :? hopefully mine can be resurfaced again...

It has a different bolt pattern that's odd. Usually GM tries to keep with everything the same.

yeah that is wierd. which bolt pattern is different...the flywheel-to-crank or the pressure plate-to-flywheel? i'd imagine it's the pressure plate mounting bolts....

You can get your flywheel from early 90's cavi's with 3.1L thats where mine came from. I'm pretty sure they got the same trans as w-bodys did too .

i think that's been discussed before. something about different gearing and i think intermediate shaft lengths...
