justa6
so, Im new here, but not very new to the W-body platform. i have a 94 cutlass supreme 4-door with the 3100 V6 and automatic tranny. its been a great car, getting me through college and all, but it now has 205,000 miles on it  its been a great car, but ive got a problem. my tranny was replaced at about 170,000 miles when it jsut gave up at 75mph. so we got it fixed, and since then i HAVE had my fluids changed. the problem im having now seems to occure when the car is warmed up. it happened more in the summer than now. but it will slip out of overdrive. what it does is i'll be cruising along say at 60 mph (happens at all speeds) and the rpms are low, then, you can feel it slip out and go into third, and the rpm's jump up, so if you were going 70 they would be at about 3000, instead of the regular. what could be causing this? is it my torque converter giving up or what? give me a hand with this please! it happens more if the vehicle is under load, say having my bike on the roof. it will ahppen quicker then. this summer it would startt to happen after driving about 40-50 miles. now, wiht it being cold here in MN ive taken it over 150 and had no problems, but i am babying the thing big time (not over 75 for long trips). thanks for the help! justa6
oh, and i forgot to mention, that when it slips out, if i stop the car, shut it off for about 30 seconds, and then start it up and take off again, it works fine for a little bit more down the road. its really weird

excelsior
JW, what happens under hard acceleration, it sounds similar to what happened to a friend of mine's Grand Am w/ the 3100.
justa6
under hard acceleration its fine, the tranny acts normal most of the time. but when it heats up, then it starts giving me problems. when the tranny starts acting up, and refuses to use overdrive, if you let off the gas, the rpms will go down just liek if it was in overdrive, but when you hit the gas again, it wont catch a gear till all the way in third. (if that mkaes sense). basically, if the car is in the "3" spot on the shifter, it will holdits rpm's for braking. when the tranny is acting all goofy, it will drive in 3rd, but when letting off the gas, will act like overdrive. hope that makes sense. thanks for the help! excelsior
thats kinda different then my friend's problem under accel. hers would miss/skip gears alot and overheat very quickly.
firefighter_0029
My 92 Regal sedan did the same thing. The rubber vacuum line on the throttle body was leaking making the tranny not gey enough vacuum. It only cost me 50 cents to fix. Mine worked fine in drive but it did the same thing as yours if I dove it in OD.
justa6
i'll have to check into that, it would be really nice if that was all it was!
digitaloutsider
Your transmission is electronically controlled. This isn't the case (unless I'm sorrily mistaken about 4T60e's) But, that does bring me to a problem on my transmission. At WOT, it just hits the rev limiter and doesn't shift to the next gear. Could that vacuum issue possibly be my problem?

Same thing happens to mine...i'm thinking it has something to do with the thing under the battery, since i bypassed it after one of my vacuum lines broke Someone said that canister helps supply vacuum at high rpms...but i dunno
