AWD Z34 Lumina

Nope, The 6000 is an A-Body, according to:

http://www.w-body.com/gm_bodies.html

So it is the equivilant of the Cutlass Ciera and Chevy Celebrity, Though an AWD Lumina IS probably possible, as anything is with enough money and/or time. Many of the drivetrain components may bolt up, but I'm not sure. I've never seen an AWD 6000 in person, at least that I can remember.

Pontiac 6000 STE is AWD and the engine is mounted the same way as a FWD car. I have seen an older model AWD suburu wagon and other AWD cars with the engine mounted like a RWD car. Can anyone explain to me how the AWD drive train of a 6000 STE is like?

The AWD 6000's drivetrain consists of essentually this:

A "rear end" which is really just the front axle of an S-10 modified to fit

An almost-standard Hydramatic 3-speed automatic

A transfer case unique to the AWD 6000 setup

Front differential and halfshafts almost identical to the normal 2WD setup

The 3.1 engine sits transversely as it does in most any FWD application. Getting this to work properly in a Lumina (or ANY other GM FWD vehicle for the matter) would be nearly impossible. It would actually be cheaper to custom design your own 4WD/AWD system if you wanted it that badly. Unless you have lots of money to burn, this is just a pipe dream.

You can read Car and Driver's writeup on the 6000 STE (with a very nice description of the powertrain) here

IIRC, didn't the AWD 6000 get specific floor pans to fit all of the components? If so, the AWD stuff can't even be swapped to a regular 6000.

Yes, the article Shaun posted earlier in this very thread details the assembly of the 6000 STE AWD. They got their own floorpans.

i don't know the answer, but that is a good point about how difficult it would be to swap over to a w-body

Didn't GM make a 350/AWD lumina concept? Or maybe it was the beretta? But I saw a AWD 6000 a year ago in the yard it was a shame it was there. :nono:

I think it was a 305 from a Iroc to bad it never was released
