SmokesGTP
I've got a 94'gtp and i've really had very few problems with it. The car always starts fine and until yesterday had never left me stranded. I left a restaurant and got in to start it and nothing happend? The lights all are on and i checked the battery, tried jump starting it even though it was a longshot. The starter doesnt even turn over at all. At first i suspected the starter but it has had no signs of going and has only about 25k on it. I have heard the ignition lock cylinder will sometimes go on these cars could that be it? Ihecked the timing belt too and thats fine only replaced about 20k ago. At first I figured it was the pass-lock chip on the key, which did the same thing on my 94' bonneville, but the backup key doesnt work either. I'm all out of ideas any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
toastemcutlass
have you tried starting it in different gears? maybe the neutral saftey switch is messed up, happend to mine and it would start in reverse. be careful not to run anything over doing so. if not might want to take something to the starter like a hammer but not hard or you will reck the magnits the brushes might be dirty but remeber not hard with the hammer. Guest Anonymous
Mine did the same thing as yours when my starter was going. Tapped on it with a hammer to get it moving until I got a new one.
Redfox340
Agreed... when my starter was on it's last turn, it got hung up between the magnets (inside to run the motor) and like what Redturbo90 said, you'll have to hit it with a hammer to rotate. I had an old piece of rebarb I used for the week I could grab some money for the replacement... Also... (won't really add much, but to cover all bases) http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1858&highlight= - RedFox340
NORBI
I had similar problems with my but i had two things happening with my. 1. Was a neutral switch and each time my car wouldnt start i just put in neutral and move an inch forward and then it would start. 2. Was my starter and to start my car i was moving my key to start and stop quickly couple times and its finally started and if that didnt help i hit my starter with something (not too hard) and finally its started up. So try this. :read:
SmokesGTP
Thanks for the input guys. Honestly I couldnt find the starter on this piece a shit. I'm not much of a mechanic but if I can find it I am certain though I could tap it with a hammer
toastemcutlass
hey the starter is really easy to find. look at the front of the motor(facing the front of the car) and reach down in between the motor and the radiator. it best reached from under the car
ctx46
yeah... if you have done a oil change on your car you have gotten oil all over it because its right below the oil filter......
SmokesGTP
Well I hit it with a hammer and it started. I couldn't beileve it. But now I have another problem. An oil leak which I presume is the dist. O ring is leaking bad. I probly on average go through about a quart every 400 miles or so but I have never seen it this bad. I can lay under the car and watch the oil drip down and hit the garage floor while its running. It never used to be like this till it sat for a few days. Anyone have a suggestion or a way they did theirs that worked easily and relatively cheaply? Thanks.
SmokesGTP
Nevermind My dad and I found the problem it was dark last night and today I realized the leak was ATF. The oil is leaking no more than it ever was. After a little investigation I realized the trans line that goes right behind the radiator is split. After moving the hose I got it stop leaking for the time being.
NORBI
Try one of those fluids that stop leaks i used it once on my corvette to seal a head gasket and it sealed it and that was a big hole about 2 in long and stopped leaking. SmokesGTP
Thanks I might try that but it wont be too expensive to just get the line fixed. I finally got the car back to my house from my dads and got it parked backwards in the garage in case I gotta get it towed if the starter craps again. Anyone know how much a starter is gonna run me on this beast? It looks like a PITA. You have to take out the oil cooler and their isnt much clearance down there. NORBI
If you go to a mechanic probably 120$ thats how much they charge around here NJ and if you do it yourself ( i just did it) i only plaid for starter 35$
