slick
Basically over 4000 rpms, the volt guage will drop less than half, and all my lights will dim heavily. Under normal driving, it's fine though. Alt. doesn't wine at all. Once i let off the gas after heavy acceleration, the volt guage will jump back to normal, jump back down, then return to normal. Kinda odd. I have an extra battery I'm gonna drop in there tomorrow to see if it helps any. Any ideas?
sonyman87
voltage regulator or the wire that tells the altinator how much power to put out is loose or not connected. we had a guy at 2004mymonte meet put a new altinator in and drove off and the car keeped dying only got 3volts out of the altinator. turns out the idiot didnt connect the altinator to the computer. plugged it in bam instant 14volts
skiiirt
I was reading on the service bulletins that irregular voltage and dimming of lights was common. and not something to worry about unless you are seriously loosing power.. My lights dim and sometimes at the lights i will drop to below half then as soon as i accelerate everything goes back to normal I could be wrong tho

pitzel
Same problem here, with a brand new alternator. Funny thing is, my old alternator didn't have that problem, but one of the diodes and the bearings were starting to fail, so it had to be replaced. In all fairness, I've been able to drive the car normally even with the voltmeter on the DIS reading 8.5V. It just scares the beejezus out of me, especially when driving at night in very cold and isolated rural areas here in Western/northern Canada. sonyman87
with the UD pully on.. i have seen latelly with the cold wather at idel from 14.3-14.5volts constant ... usually its around 14.2-14.3 at idel when warm and in gear at 750rpms it will drop as low as 12.4volts if sitting for a while
pitzel
Damn sonyman, no wonder GM gstopped putting gauges in their cars after 1994 or so. Simply because knowing this much information is kind of unnerving to people. Are our electrical systems *really* that taxxed that a 105A alternator isn't enough? Granted, a 105A alternator only puts out 60A or so at idle speeds, but I guess 720W really doesn't go very far at all with all the electronic gadgetry to run in these cars. When sitting at idle, and running the rear defroster, its pretty scary how far the needle drops.
dbtk2
My car doesn't have a factory volt gauge and I'd like to keep it that way. My lights all work fine, the stereo works fine, wipers, etc... and the car stats everytime I turn the key, so the charging system is working good enough for me. I don't think I would worry about a problem like that as long as it is keeping the battery charged. Shawn
