Guest TurboSedan
today i found my Craftsman valve spring compressor and decided to try and R & R a valve in one of my TGP heads. after a few minutes i had the valve out and back in....much easier than i expected but how do i remove the old valve seal? just yank it out of there or? anything special i should know about when reinstalling the valve? am i supposed to use some kind of grease or something on the valve keepers when i put it back together? sorry if that's a stupid question but i'm totally new to this. oh and how should i go about cleaning the valves themselves before reassembly? thanks
93CutlassSupreme
i've just used mineral spirts on valves before i put them back in the head
Guest TurboSedan
yeah i was wanting to maybe use a SS wire brush wheel on my Dremel (or a bench wheel) and some Brakleen. i won't try that though unless i know for sure it won't hurt anything. Guest Anonymous
Ever use a glass bead blasting machine? That will clean those valves up quick.

Brian P
I can just assume the heads are off the block, lol. Just wipe them down good if they're not that bad. The keepers I used a magnetic wand to take them out and the reinstall I CAREFULLY put them back in. Those things can go flying, don't lose em! Those things can go flying, don't lose em! ok i just got done pulling all of the valves out. i almost lost one of them damn keepers  fwiw i now have all the valvetrain parts in thier own labeled ziplock bags if it even matters (1E, 1I, 2E, 2I, 3E etc etc). i was starting to think #5 intake valve was bent because the fucker wouldn't come out but i sprayed some WD-40 into the intake port and it finally slid right out (lots of rust in there). other than that everything seems fine besides lots of carbon crud. right now the VIN 'T' engine is in the garage on the engine stand stripped down to the shortblock and cleaned...waiting for me to put it all back together. my head gaskets, head bolts, valve seals etc haven't gotten here yet. this 'T' engine is getting the heads from my TGP engine (and all other turbo parts). the 'V' engine is on another engine stand tucked back in the corner of the garage. Or are you in a hurry? i might, just want to avoid the shipping if i can lol. i'm hoping to have the heads cleaned and back together with new seals next week sometime. hopefully i'll have the heads and lower intake back on then too. still not sure if i should try checking the heads for flatness myself with a straight edge & feeler gauges or just have a shop do it :?: i want to avoid resurfacing if possible.
