jeremy
just replace the compressor...
Robby1870
Im with the idea of just replacing the compressor, but I know 3.1Ls were available in 88 with no A/C. But if you cut out the A/C you'll need an idler there. Plus, I dont know if a 3.1L belt would work on a 3100. So, after all that rambling, just replace the compressor

Dannymik
you can get one at the j/y for around $60 and up...or go to a u-pull it for much cheaper. I drove with a stuck clutch in my a/c compressor for a long time.
93CutlassSupreme
or, you could just leave it. i developed a massive freon leak mid summer, and since i refuse to spend any more on my ride, i just left it.
z34_nut
theres no clutch on our AC compressors. they ar V5 type compressors. variable displacement. it is always turning and always on. the only thing that changes is a vacuum oriented valve that tells the compresser to change its displacment to move R-12. apperently i heard that R-134a conversions are easy for w-bodies. that is if the compressor works and the h-block is working correctly. other then that, all you need to do it add a new accumulator and adaptors. The V5 compressor does have a clutch. When the clutch is engaged the compressor attempts to maintain a low side pressure of 28-35 psi by adjusting the stroke of the swash plate inside. The low side pressure is good for R-12 as this means you will have a core temp of 30-35 degrees not so good for R-134 as your core temps will generally be 33-45 degrees.
