Im with the idea of just replacing the compressor, but I know 3.1Ls were available in 88 with no A/C. But if you cut out the A/C you'll need an idler there. Plus, I dont know if a 3.1L belt would work on a 3100. So, after all that rambling, just replace the compressor

theres no clutch on our AC compressors. they ar V5 type compressors.

variable displacement.

it is always turning and always on. the only thing that changes is a vacuum oriented valve that tells the compresser to change its displacment to move R-12.

apperently i heard that R-134a conversions are easy for w-bodies. that is if the compressor works and the h-block is working correctly. other then that, all you need to do it add a new accumulator and adaptors.

The V5 compressor does have a clutch. When the clutch is engaged the compressor attempts to maintain a low side pressure of 28-35 psi by adjusting the stroke of the swash plate inside. The low side pressure is good for R-12 as this means you will have a core temp of 30-35 degrees not so good for R-134 as your core temps will generally be 33-45 degrees.
