Bossman429
I've been watching from the sidelines for a long time, but today I bought an STE, so now I'm in, baby! The guy who sold me the STE recommended Mobil 1 15W50 Synthetic, I thought that seemed a little thick. He warned that 5W30 would cause a rod knock, has anyone seen this happen? The oil cap recommends 10W30, which is what I'd like to run because it's a little more common that 15W50. Unless someone can verify that he is on the right track. Anyone want to pipe in with their comments or recommendations?
gp90se
synthetic or not, id tell ya 10w30 in the winter and 10w40 in the summer.
DaveFromColorado
I run 15w50 in my Turbo stang, but I give it a LONG warm up before I take 'er out and start gettin' into the gas. the 15w50 is VERY thick, and if you're getting a rod knock with a lighter oil, then you've got other problems. --Dave. dbtk2
10w-30 all year round just like it says on the oil cap. Follow the warm up and cool down procedures and you should have no problems. If the engine has a rod knock with lighter oil it definately has other problems. Got any pics of the car? What color? Bossman429
No pics yet, just on my phone, the car is a white STE, no leather, no HUD, no ETR CD player (yet hopefully) only option is a sunroof, but that's fine with me. I've been looking into TGPs for a while because I was always into 3.1s. I saw the car for sale in the paper, and decided to go look at it with my step dad, who also has a 92 Euro Lumina with a 3.1. He was immpressed by the car, and so was I, so I bought it. Has a few little problems here and there, but nothing I haven't already had to fix on the Beretta. I think I'm gonna run 10W30 Mobil when I change the oil, with the 15W50 in it oil pressure is around 80 or higher, almost to the top of the gauge, I figure 10W30 should bring it down to about 60-80. As my Beretta runs about 40-60, maybe 80 with 5W30. What are the proper warm up, and cool down procedures? I read the owners manual but don't remember seeing anything about warm up procedure. All I got with the car was the owners manual, so I don't have any of the supplements that came with it new, probably explaining that. I know turbos need a minute or two idling to cool down after running, so hot oil doesn't sit in the turbo. If you guys could clue me in to these procedures, that'd be great. I'll get the car on Thanksgiving, since I left it with my mom to get tagged, inspected, and insured, like a dog at the Vet. Thanks!
gp90se
I always let all of my cars idle between 3-5 minutes before driving them in the morning or when the engine is cold so the oil has a chance to get up onto the valvetrain (and turbo). On a turbo motor. you want to make sure the turbo has cooled down before shutting it, but that shouldnt take more then 20-30 seconds, so that would be my recommendation before shutting the motor off. z284pwr
I have run 20W-50 in my engines for quite a while now. At one point when I just had the '88 Beretta with the poor old 2.8 with 230,000 miles, I ran 20W-50 with STP oil treatment which was way thick, and when we pulled it apart, it was way clean inside. So I just kept on running that oil in the new built 3.1, So it gets Mobil 1, it is in a garage at night, so I'm not worried about the thickness as much. This thread reminds me of my friend's race car last year at Las Vegas, car was burning oil like crazy leakin pas the seals and they got black flagged, haha, so they decided to "Up" the oil grade, and run Gear Oil - 80W-120 I believe it was, haha.....took like an hour to put the oil in....
