ThunderBat
I ran a search of the powertrain forum and was surprised I didnt get a hit on this. I figured that every concieveable swap had already been discussed here at some point...I havent been able to find much info on the 3.5 other than calling it the mini northstar. Does the northstar setup use a timing belt or a chain?...and has the swap already been discussed here before?...seems like the power and torque are pretty much the same between the two engines but I'm assuming the reliability is better. WhiteOut
The shortstar (3.5 DOHC) uses a timing chain. I think the consensus here has pretty much been "whats the point?" since it is esentially the same engine. It may also be a bit of a tough fit since its a 90 degree V6. ThunderBat
I think I remember reading in another thread that was not enough room in the engine bay to accomodate a 90degree engine...but then that couldnt be the case because I've seen 1st gen "W"s with the L67 swap...I suppose the biggest headache would be the wiring and such since the NorthStar engines are more complex electronically...as far as whats the point, it would be to have an engine that offers the same or better performance with better reliability...although for the cost of such a swap you could probably do the L67 cheaper, or beef up a 3100, all with a lot less headache...what we need is an engineer or a machinist (or both) to come up with a timing chain replacement kit for the 3.4...then you could have the performance and forget-about-it maint on that part of the engine...now if they could just do something about that alternator thing it would be a great engine with performance and reliability...guys, please dont take all this the wrong way, I know alot of you out there have these engines and love them...and who knows, maybe if I had ever owned one and was spoiled by the performance I might not be so chicken about buying one. WhiteOut
Its not so much that a 90 engine won't fit in the bay because they do fit, as evidenced by the 3800 series. Its more of an issue of fitting a DOHC 90 engine into the bay of these cars. I would totally agree that slapping an L67 would be a much brighter idea. Either way your going to have to do wiring, and the L67 is more more reliable even than a 3.5 Shortstar. The cost will likely be about the same, so the choice seems obvious. I'm kinda indifferant about my 3.4. Its a fun engine to drive, but its a complete bitch to do anything on. I've had two cars with 3800's before this and I liked that engine because it was easy to work on in most cases, but it just didn't have the exhaust note or high reving character that the 3.4 does. So I guess it depends on what your willing to sacrifice when owning a car, becuause it seems rare to find a fun and reliable engine.
rudefyet
It really wouldn't be that hard to make a timing chain kit for the 3.4 DOHC if someone want's to donate me a 3.4 i'll start working on one
WhiteOut
Someone on the board is giving away a 3.4 as we speak. Its in Illinois, north of Chicago, I was going to claim it but I'm having trouble finding a way to pick it up. PM toastemcutlass if interested. JoroCorona
How much different are the heads and such on a shortstar? Would they bolt onto a 3.4? And if they do, could you make the COP ignition system work with it too?
