2.97 Final Drive ratio vs. 3.33

Lower number equals slower acceleration, but lower revs on the freeway (higher MPG) and higher theoretical top speed. Higher numbers equals quicker acceleration but more revs on the freeway and a lower theoretical top speed. Seeing that going from 2.97 to 3.33 gearing will only give you about a tenth in the quarter, I would rather have the 2.97's because gas mileage would be so much better. Just my opinion though. My Calais has 3.91 gearing... Nothing like turning 3200rpm down the freeway in 5th.

:werd: i have 3.85 FDR in my GTS and 3.61 FDR in my Cutty. then again you have to take into consideration overall gear ratio of course.

is the Reatta alot lighter than the Lumina? that could be why.

Reatta's are chubby since they're built on the same platform (a shortened version) as the Toronado, Riviera, Eldorado and Seville. I think the curb weight on Reatta's was around 3400-3500 lbs. The larger cars on the platform weighed about the same...go figure.

A 3.73 is plenty high enough, especially with gasoline at $2/gal. Besides, isn't 3.73 the rear end ratio and not the final drive?

rear axle ratio.

i thought we were talking about axle ratios. did i miss something? i am running slow today

we are talking about the trans final drive ratio, your truck will have a final drive ratio and a rear end ratio. FWD only have the FDR.

because the trans and axle are the same unit?
