Darksyde
Got a 3.1 coming in the shop tomorrow however the w-body guy (me) wont be here. Seems to be oil around the distributor block-off. Is this same as the 3.4's problem? Is it easy to fix? Anything to tell them to watch out for. I've never done one on a 3.1 Or any chance its from some other common leak location? any answer is appreciated.
herb427sc
Same problem as the 3.4 except it is easier to get at because the rear head is not in the way. The plug will pull straight out.
R Dubya
The o-ring replacement is available at any GM dealer. Make sure it is brown in color and soft, not black, those one's will dry up and create the same problem. I used some RTV black around the gear drive to make sure it wouldn't leak again. Smoke1991
i still never finished putting my 3.1 back togeather, i did put the shaft back in with the new brown ring, and dumped a crapload of that sealer shit so it will never leak again my self. im just waiting for the weather to become nice again. I think it might snow tonight in NY EDIT: RW89TGP you got snow today, that sucks, the island isint getting any! ahhahaha
R Dubya
Yeah no shit, it was clear last night, I went to sleep got up at 6 for work and the ground was covered. It's nothing major yet but it will soon.. both times it's snowed so far its been at night. I had to work at 4:45am on Tuesday, I left the house and I swear every road was covered in black ice. I hate that shit.

Darksyde
ok i been off work for the past week and they have still waited for me, they quoted the guy 5-6 hrs for the job. They looked at it and said the intake has to be removed. Now i though it could be done without removing anything but the throttle body at the least. I dont make the rules because i'm not the shop foreman, but am i correct with this?
Smoke1991
idiot, if its a mpfi 3.1 like mine, its a snap because i just finished mine, take off the TB, disc the fuel lines, all of that crap, pull the dam thing up, i actually was able to pull it up with my fingers, rip off old ring, put new one, clean up a little bit, use gasket sealer, slap it back in, reasemble everything. i thought it was gona be a pita, but it wasint that bad, except me braking my dam temp sensor :-\
digitaloutsider
It should take NO MORE than one hour to do this job. Pull the TB off and you have access. This isn't brain surgery. You only have to take off the plenum and such on the 3.4.

Darksyde
ok thanx smoke i hope so, cuz i was against everything he said but anyone who works in a shop knows how a shop foreman can be. What about the coolant crossover, it shouldnt have to be disconnected right?
Smoke1991
oh that pos metal pipe! I used a huge ass screw driver to bend it outa of the way a little, like 2-3 inches, what i did is u wedged my huge screw driver between the pipe and the crossover pipe and moved it away. that pipe is bendable so i bent it, then bent it back into position :-) no need to take it off. i really wish i took pics of it to show you. anything else with this o-ring thing just let me know

digitaloutsider
The rubber hose? Just bypass it. $4 hose.
Smoke1991
but really, what perpus does it have to have coolant running through the dam tb?
digitaloutsider
In very cold climates, the TB can stick wide open.. and that would not be good at all.

Then it would turn out like that kid in the Subaru WRX hitting the house
Smoke1991
then it would be a bad idea to bypass it when i live in NY right?
