hi-po3.1 vs 3.4

GPXSS modded his 3.1 to run 15.5 in a 93 4 door grand prix. There are some other low 15 (till they run it at the track again with the tuning and a few other mods) gen 3s in W bodies as well. This is about the same as a stock DOHC, though they range from 15.2 to 16.2 depending on their condition. 5 speed DOHCs are in the 14s now and probably 13s next year. Turbo 3.1s and 3100/3400s are around and I am sure are in the 13s if not closer to 12s. Turbo 3.1 in a cavalier is at 12.3 till he runs at the track again as well after fixing a leaking BOV. It really depends on what you want to do and what you want to spend. Chris (gpxss) used gen 3 smaller port top end, 65mm TB, ported heads, high compression, crane cam, and tuning to run his 15.5. The mid 15 gen 3s are custom cam, high compression, headers on one of them, and tuning...no porting at all done yet. Yes, the gen 3 top end swaps onto the 3.1 and with a reprogrammed chip to make full use if it, makes a lot more power than the 3.1 with gen 2 parts can hope for NA.

thanx Vegeta, lots of cool info...so basically this 95 Cutty vert I looked at w/ 3.1...if i just wanted to rebuild the existing engine, I go with an aftermarket cam, gen3 top end and a bigger throttle body (did I miss anything?)...where can you get the 65mm TB?...and do you need an adapter plate to fit the 3100 intake?...and pardon my ignorance here but what year models are gen3 engines?

95 is gen 3, but its the smaller port runners. Honestly I dont know if its worth going to the larger runners vs porting the stock ones out considering what chris was able to pull on his 3.1 with the smaller port gen 3 runners. The 65mm TB was billet made for FDP and isn't around anymore. The guy who made them could make more but I never see him online. I do want to carry them and the 62mm billet TBs though for my store so I will definetly be finding out more info on that. The cams out now are all regrinds, or you can have crower make a custom cam, or wait for comp cams to get their cores in and start making cams. Regrinds are much cheaper though, and no one knows the difference in performance between regrind possibilities and what a custom cam could do.

The larger runner gen 3 manifolds would require an EGR adapter, or to just block off the EGR completely. They started with the 3400s in 96, in the minivans and 96-99 use the newer type EGR. 2000+ use another different EGR as well, and the coolant pipe is press fit vs threaded. I don't know if you would have to do anything special for that or not. 2000+ 3100 also got the larger port runners, and the larger intake valve like all 3400s have (1 mm larger). Also, starting in 96, some (not all) gen 3 motors switched to roller fulcrum rocker arms. Still 1.6:1 ratio rockers like 94-95 ball types but they do reduce frictional losses.

There is also the 3500 plenum....colin is trying it out on his cavalier and has a few pics of what he had to do to fit that on the 60v6 forum. I suggest looking around there for more info since its a site devoted to the 60V6 motors and its not just w body owners to learn from:)

I'll agree the 3.4 is a more advanced engine. Personally I'd rather have the 3.1 (you can probably tell why I'm biased). It's a simpler design that has been around for a long time and is generally known to be long lasting and reliable. The 3.4 is probably just as reliable with the right maintenence. It seems though that with the 3.1 being around longer and in more vehicles that it makes more sense money wise.

I know that 60º V6's can be made to be fast and some of those times are very impressive. I meant more by "not in the same league" than just quarter mile times. There is more to a car than that. Some people, like me, will always prefer a V-8 even if V-6's can be made to be very fast. However, I would rather have a stock '96 Camaro Z28 SS that can pull a 13.6 than a turbo 3.1 in a J-body that is in the 12's.

Ok? Im still telling him what has been done and what he can do, regardless of your opinion on leagues and whatnot. Im not trying to impress you with any of this information and wish you the best with your V8s.

Yah I must say, even though I can beat my dads 94 LT1 6-speed, driving that car is just a blast.

The brakes slam your face to the windshield, the handling is amazing, the seating position is awesome, the drop top is badass, and donuts are fun as hell. So even though my Lumina is faster, it just isn't the same. And otrque oh my God torque. Don't even get me started on torque
