w-bodys_are_the_best
hey i was just wondering, last january my transmission dropped, and i had another one put in, from a salvage yard, my car is a 1994 cutlass supreme sl, but when we replaced the tranny, we ended up having to buy a 95, because i think oldsmobile put in a 95 drivetrain, car was built in july of 94, but the 94 and 95 4T60E's mount differently and i think the connectors are different for the computer, but mine was a 95 4T60E from the factory, you could tell it was'nt ever replaced. Well ever since then, if you park on the street where you can just go straight to drive, the overdrive and 4th will work just fine, but if you park in a driveway or anywhere other then that where you have to put it in reverse and back up, when you go out of town, it won't even go into fourth, and when your doing about 60 or so, runnin around 3,000 rpm, then you let off, the rpm's just drop off like it's in neutral, then you hit the gas again, and it'll jump right back to where it was, and kick into 3rd again, i used to just run it in 3rd cause i didn't realise what was causing it or how to fix it, well shortly after that, maybe a week or so i noticed it only did it once in awhile, well then i figured out how to reset it, so now every once in awhile, it'll act up and you gotta pull over and shut the car off in park, and turn the key on wait at least 10 sec. turn it off wait another 10 sec. then turn it on to the run position again for another 10 seconds, then start it it will shift into 4th, and lock up, so this gets me by, but it is very annoying to have to do that all the time, another note, it won't start in neutral at all thats why i have to pull over all the time and put it in park, i think either the shop that put it in fucked up the shift cable, they said it was a little screwy, but they probably bent it or something putting it in, otherwise i was thinking it was the computer, but the shop told me to put in seafoam brand transmission conditioner in there cause it may have a sticking valve i bought the conditioner, but didn't put it in there yet, anyone got any other suggestions, the miles on this used tranny i think were 75k i could take it to another shop and have them look at it, they specialize in transmissions, but they wanna charge me $45 or $35 to even look at is, so if anyone knows about this, let me know what the deal is, thanks
Brian P
the gear switch could possibly mess your shifting up. If you're in OD but it thinks electrically you're in 3rd, for example. I would look into that first.
FastSE2DR
the gear switch could possibly mess your shifting up. If you're in OD but it thinks electrically you're in 3rd, for example. I would look into that first. This is EXACTLY what happens to my car. Now it's doing it with 3rd gear too. Before I get flamed: HOLY OLD POST BATMAN!! There I said it! w-bodys_are_the_best
LOL I was reading through and thought WTF, I dint post anything, why is my pic on here. Damn this is an old post, no the tranny was never fixed, stuck way to much money into the car, and just gave up, believe me, find a good tranny shop and have them rebuild it if you can come up with the money, they wanted $1200 to do mine but I didn't have the money. The cheapest I could find a j/y tranny was $450, then I payed another $300 to get it put in, but I've come to the conclusion that they must have bent the linkage while putting it in, because I could put mine almost into neutral and it would shift and lock up. The shop also said when I picked it up that I might need a new shift cable, I said, "Why would I? it was fine when I brought it in." He didn't have anything to say to that, and when I brought it up awhile down the road he said I must have gotten a bad tranny. Until I got my cavalier, I used to wedge my Kenwwod remote between the cup holder and shifter and it would hold it in the right spot, almost into neutral, and it would shift, but the car is junk now, i didn't help the tranny much after that, I beat that car bad after spending all the money. One day I was drunk and very very very pissed off, put it in neutral and dropped it into reverse at WOT going 45 down a gravel. I fixed the transmission alright I actually still drive it when I have nothing else to drive, still runs the same in forward gears, but obviously has no reverse. I was actually going to drive it to work last night, but the thermostat clogged i think or froze and the hose blew, i'm going to take the thermostat out and run it without just to get it home, the coolant looks like rusty sludge, and the overfill tank looks like runny cowpie. I also hit a deer at 75 MPH not too long after the tranny went, and totaled it out, paid it off with the INS, and put a header panel and hood off a white 92 i bought for parts. This car is junk, and on it's very last leg, the interior will be parted out when I actually get time, and the rest is going to the crusher. slick
Do you think when you swapped the connectors that you may have mismatched one or two of the wires?
Brian P
yeah....and had you OR the tranny shop knew that the shift cable was adjustable (just before the linkage), and it's a 5 minute job to get it lined up correctly, you would have been in good shape. I had tio adjust mine when I installed the reman tranny, since it's difficult to get lined up correctly doing it visually.
FastSE2DR
If I get under the car, will I know how to adjust it?
Cueman
Let me know when you part the car out. I need the Drivers side tail light and the passenger side marker light..PM me. Thanks! Brian
Brian P
you adjust it while under the hood. I won't give you details unless you want it, but basically put the shifter in Neutral, under the master cylinder (you'll have to remove the airbox) you'll see a bracket, a round plastic piece, and a spring. On that plastic piece is a white (sometimes black) clip you'll lift up. Then just manually put the shifter into "N" be sure it's centered, then be sure the tranny switch on top of the case is correctly in N, then push down the clip to lock it.
