Robby1870
I was coasting at a slow speed and the car went to downshift from 2nd to 1st, and when it did it made a grinding noise and now I dont have 1st or 4th gear. It wont go into 1st or 4th and the 2-3 shift is slow. The torque converter wont lock up either. When idling in park I hear stuff rolling around. I was thinking the 1-2 shift spring was going bad anyway, but that wont explain it not going into 4th. Any help?

I didn't have reverse, 1st, or 3rd gear (it may or may not have had 4th...didn't drive fast enough to see). If I revved it in any gear you could hear stuff in the tranny spinning, but obviously not cathing. I saw the parts that came out today, and holy shit it was bad. I will take pics of the bad parts. One of the shafts in there had the gears completely stripped off the end. Shawn
Brian P
Aw dammit Robby. Get it home and bless the '92's trans with a new home. Even if the spring broke, it'll still shift. Just go the easy way out. Fly me over there and I'll assist

I wont be able to do it til the week of Thanksgiving though. And, I might have to trailer the STE home. Im not sure the STE will make it home on its own. It turns 3K at 60mph now. DaveFromColorado
if it's a 4T60-E ... no first and fourth could be a burned up solenoid (solenoid A) - this would also be the case is you had no reverse. I can't find the infromation for the non-electronic trans... (and I'm too lazy to find my book right now) --Dave
GP1138
I would think it's a 4T60, since it's a '90. I'm sorry to hear that, Robby. That's the kiss of death for these trannies.
Robby1870
its a 4T60, just for clarification

dbtk2
Well I have a little more power than you guys, and my tranny is more built up for the power, but my tranny had 78k on it when it went. Shawn
maybe2fast
why don't you turn down the vacuum modulator on the next trans it may have been alittle to much, Robby (3 turns)

Robby1870
Rev is gone too. So the band (1st, 4th, Rev) is blown up. Anyone know how much to fix it? I wont need a full rebuild.
DaveFromColorado
I'm gonna guess it's a valve body problem, I've been lazy all day, I'll find my book here in the next few hours and edit this post with some good information - --Dave. Robby1870
Would it cause any other harm to drive it hom with only 2&3? I turn 3K at 60mph now, so I'd just do 60 the whole way. Only problem is its 300 miles to home. Anyone konw? I dont think the valve body would make a grinding noise
DaveFromColorado
you should* be able to, just make sure you check your fluid regularly to make sure it's not overheating and burning up inside your trans, and watch your engine temps too - the higher RPM's could cause more heat to build up, even tho the pump will be spinning faster. if you want to save the inside of your trans. Remember, the 125C/4T60's are the same transmissions with the exception being the 4T60's have the overdrive gear (.705) the gear ratio's are real close too.. TH-125-C (3T40) ... First-2.840 ... Second-1.600 ... Third-1.000 ... no OD --- ... R-2.067 TH-440-T4 (4T60) ... First-2.921 ... Second-1.568 ... Third-1.000 ... OD-0.705 ... R-2.385 --Dave. Robby1870
No, I've got the tranny from the wrecked 92 at home that I want to put in. Its SOLID, super crisp shifts. I took care of that tranny and its only got 98K on it where this one has 165K
DaveFromColorado
300 miles shouldn't be too bad then - just make sure it doesn't overheat and leave ya stuck somewhere - and make sure you have a cell phone, and tripple-A in case you do get stuck. --Dave. Robby1870
Well, my parents are coming to get me on Friday (after finals, we are on quarters up here). Taking it to a shop at home that will rebuild it (the problem, they are prettys sure of, is that the sun shell or whatever you want to call it, blew up) with Raybestos clutches, bands, etc all for $1072+tax. Thats a complete rebuid for abou 1200 after tax, not too bad. They are going to install a stronger sun shell and the strongest parts they can find. Its a trusted shop, my dad knows them (in fact, he had a clutch put in his '62 Catalina by them in the 70's). Looking forward to a new tranny. It should be fun trying to drive it on the 4 wheel car dolly in 2nd gear! I hope its got enough gear to get it up there. Then backing it off the trailer with no reverse. Should be interesting. Oh, and new tires too when I go home, Goodyear GT-HRs, 235/55/16s. Should be like a brand new car when its all done.

Nice I was thinking after I have my engine rebuilt or get a new one that it would make my car feel like new again also. And for over a grand it should feel new
93CutlassSupreme
in my experience rebuilt engines and transmissions arn't the same, at least from GM. our '89 Astro spun a bearing at 12K, and Dexter Chevrolet installed a short-block. the car never ran the same. one of my pop's contractors blew a trans cooler line in a '04 Sonoma, and the trans burned up. GM put in a rebuilt 4L60E. the truck just feels different now, it shifts rougher. you will feel a difference. i know if i ever lost my engine or trans i'd just junk the car. Robby1870
As long as its shifts and I have 4 forward gears and rev, and know I dont have to worry with it for a while, I dont care. I can adjust shift feel via the adj. modulator
