Exhaust on a '91 lumina

I have a 91 3.1 mpfi Lumina and i have straight pipes with a flowmaster and it sounds like fucking hell....it sounds metallic as fuck and really just sounds like a piece of shit more than anything, should I add a catyltic converter back on or what?!

Welcome to the world of W-Body exaust. My 89 regal sounds about the same. I've got straight pipes going to the factory muffler. (the previous owner pulled out the cat) The only way to get a half decent sounding exaustis to slap on a resonator in place of the cat. I wanna do this once I get the money.

How much does a resinator even cost and what does it do compared to a catyltic converter....and why would i put a glaspak on there wouldnt that just make it louder than more retarded, i dont even really know what a glasspak does or where it goes but im sure my dad does....would a glasspak sound like shit on my car tho?

a glass pack is like $25 or so. What it is, is like a straight through muffler with baffels that direct exhaust into the fiber glass. With the combination muffler and glasspack it should sound real good.

my exhuast looks the same as urs on ur cutlass teejay or well i got the same muffler tip that comes out like that...i tried to get some flowmaster that split into 2 pipes but my tire storage thing was in the way...what exhaust do u have on there is it just stock??? and i also have bigger pipes on my car than stock either 2.25 or 2.5, should i still get a glasspak, and if so give me an example of what it would sound like?? like would it sound like a little 4-banger s10 with one, or like say a 3.4 camaro with flowmaster????

put a glass pack in place where the cat was. i would probably get rid of the Flowmaster too and get a good straight through muffler like a Dynomax Ultraflo.

 

i got rid of my cat and my exhaust was also very raspy. kinda embarassing really - it sounded like total ass. i would put a glass pack on mine, but i think the turbocharger will take care of the raspiness :wink:

What would be the difference between putting a glass pak on there and just putting a catyltic converter on there? which would sound better...? not to mention i got pulled over cuz it sounded like so much ass lol

the only difference between using a catalytic and a glasspack is the ammount of dent it will put in your wallet when you buy one. If you don't have emission laws and inspections to worry about, go the glasspack route and leave the flowmaster on there as well.

Well i've been looking at online catalogs like jegs, summit, and jcwhitney, but it seems pretty hard to find glasspacks...the only one i found was a Cherry Bomb glasspack...is this what i want?

It has a 40-series Flowmaster and a 2.25" straight pipe in place of the cat. The tips you are seeing are actually twins. It sounds awesome, but has a little too much rasp around 2000-2400 RPM. I'm putting a Catco on soon to help with that.

 

I have some 3.1 exhaust clips on my computer at home. PM me if you want me to send them to ya.

glasspacks definately man...

 

straight pipes don't sound that bad...lol, that's what I got on my 3.1MPFI. it sounds great in neutral and in first gear but once you get into second you can't hear it as much.
