stockgp
why does my alternator whine? not when the car's running, but when it's just sitting there, ignition off, i can hear it whining. is this normal? i just thought of this, but it sounds like jim carrey in dumb&dumber when he makes the most annoying sound in the world, only really quiet anda again, the alt being part of the motor i figured this was the right section. if not, sorry

midnight rider
your alt has a very short time to live. start looking for a new one.
pitzel
Mine's made the whine ever since I got the car, at roughly 96,000km. 11.5k later, its still whining, but now i am experiencing obvious electrical problems. Soon as my new iceberg alternator shows up (http://www.alternatorparts.com), hopefully my whine will be gone. Sounds sort of like a supercharger, eh? stockgp
no the whining i'm talking about is with the car off, and it's very quiet.
pitzel
Yeah diodes probably then. Nevertheless the advice remains the same, replace the alternator.
HokemBokem
no the whining i'm talking about is with the car off, and it's very quiet. My friends maxima did the same thing. A couple days later and the alternator was dead.
