how do you tell the difference between the muncie and getrag 282? what are the differences?

as far as i know there is no difference; it's Muncie built and Getrag design. the one you don't want is the Isuzu 282.

ok, what identifies the isuzu from the other then?

i'm not sure, i never have seen one up close. the Isuzu 282 was basically the 5-speed that was mated to the lower output 4 cylinder engines such as the LO Quad-4 and the non-turbo 2.0L. the HO Quad-4 and Turbo 2.0L still got the Getrag 282, but it had a 4 cylinder bellhousing.

so then you could only get those in say a sunbird or something. okay. i was just curious cuzi bought a 5 speed and the only thing i could find on it was a sticker, but it was so filthy it couldn't be read. the haynes manual says something about a sticker or a stamped number denoting the difference between the getrag and muncie. i always thought they were the same like you said, german designed muncie built, but the manual confused me.

i don't know, i could be wrong! i just pulled the Getrag 282 out of my Cutlass today and it does have a sticker on it. i'll take a picture of the sticker and post it tomarrow.
