JoroCorona
I need to know about how long your average do it yourselfer would take changing the timing belt. Just so I have a base line.
DaveFromColorado
I've looked over the instructions, and if I had all the tools, pleanty of light, and a warm area to work, I could probably do it in about 6 - 6.5 hours myself (no help from anyone else) I haven't tried to do it yet, but I'm plannin' on doin' it sometime in the near future. --Dave. digitaloutsider
Jesus fuck. Would it really take THAT long?
JoroCorona
A friend of mine who is GM certified Tech said it takes him 8 hours... but he is slow as fuck. And the dealer wants 12 hours for the job. I was figuring it would be about half that.
DaveFromColorado
I've heard guys doin' it in 3 hours - due to inexpirence with THIS engine, I say longer for me. I've done timing belts in nearly everything else tho.. Dodge Neon's (the SOHC version) my Mustang 2.3 Turbo, TONS of Escort 1.9 timing belts - so I've got some idea of what needs to be done with them ... --Dave. digitaloutsider
What exactly is all involved?
JoroCorona
because GM didn't key the cam gears, you have to retime the entire top end. and the side of that motor a fucker to get too.
DaveFromColorado
here's the "picture walkthrough" http://www.60degreev6.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=DOHC&file=index&req=viewarticle&artid=12&page=1 --Dave.
digitaloutsider
You know.. at one time I actually wanted that engine.. No, it's not that difficult to do, but fuck what a pain in the ass..
loominaz34
I did it in about 3.5 hours the second attempt. It depends on which method you use. I used the timing marks (bad idea). If you use those, be ABSOLUTELY SURE you're using the right marks. There were some yellow ones that had me totally befuddled.[/b]
lukee1982
I did it in about 7 hours that includes packing everthing up and moving the car inside because of weather. I used the gm training video which that helped a ton if you want it I have it. If you haven't snapped the belt and the car is running good you shouldn't have to retime the engine. Just replace all idler pullys belt tensior actuator. so that you don't have to do it again for 60k
GP1138
You know.. at one time I actually wanted that engine.. No, it's not that difficult to do, but fuck what a pain in the ass.. Wow.. Ditto. I just read through that whole thing. I really don't think I'll be getting that engine..
JoroCorona
I cant find anyone with the cam tools, and i dont have the tools to make the tools... Luke, If you could email me that vid, that would rock. joroandco2@aol.com AND HOW IN THE HELL DO YOU GET THESE GOD FORSAKEN CAM GEARS OFF WITHOUT THE CAM GEAR TOOL! Someone told me you could brace it against the block with a screwdriver and pop it off, but I cant get it to come.
DaveFromColorado
I don't know if you want to try to pry the cam gears off, you may want to try to find the correct tools for that, perhaps a steering wheel puller may work (just a thought) I haven't dug into mine yet, but I will be soon... --Dave.
