boechler14
i was thinkin about gettin my cataylic converter taken out and just puttin in a straight pipe and was just wondering if it has any upsides as well as down sides thanks den
slick
If you have to get your car checked to pass emissions, you will never pass without a cat. Also, just get a high flow cat. You will lose hardly any power and you will still be helping out the environment.
jeremy
I loved the sound of my v6 fiero when I straight piped it, but straight piping my probe made it raspy as hell....
boechler14
would i lose power if i took out the cat? if so then i dont really wanna be doin that my cars struggling as it is ....in the probe was there any major differences between the fiero ? i have a 3.1 if that will give you a better idea on how mine will sound
TeeJay3800
Straight piping is fine if your state doesn't have emissions checking. One car without a cat makes no difference to the overall environment. You will notice a difference when you take it off if the cat is clogged. However, on our engines there is virtually no difference between running a straight-pipe or a high-flow cat as far as power. As far as sound, depending on what else you have done to the exhaust, you may want a resonator. The cat acts as a resonator when its installed, so taking it off may make your exhaust a little raspy. I have no cat with a Flowmaster 40. It sounds damn good, but could use a resonator (thats why I'm putting on a Catco). would i lose power if i took out the cat? if so then i dont really wanna be doin that my cars struggling as it is .... You won't loose much of anything. My low-end torque didn't drop off at all.
boechler14
i havent done anything to my exhaust its comepltly original  how much does one of those resonators cost roughly? and as far as emission control stuff i live in canada and im pretty sure they dont worry to much about that kind of thing
HokemBokem
Ive passed emissions to get my plates, do I have to take it again? If so how often is it. Last time I went the failed me bc my service engine light was on.

Last time I went the failed me bc my service engine light was on. that is state specific, hell in MI we don't even have the tests.....next time if the light is on and you have to get it tested, pull the cluster and yank out the light... TeeJay3800
if its something you decide on doing private message me i'll give you the howto for a o2 simulator. That's only necessary on OBDII (1.5 I think too) cars where the O2 is far back in the exhaust. OBDI cars have the O2 sensor in the rear manifold, so having no cat is not a problem. Maybe his is a newer car I dunno.....he has no info in his sig.

boechler14
my cars a 90 3.1 so hopefully thatll help you out with the o2s thing ..im pretty sure tho mine is in the rear manifold

There will no draw back to removing the cat other than increased emmisions and maybe some raspiness (but not likely with the stock muffler). DaveFromColorado
my old sunbird still passed emissions with no catalytic converter (well, a gutted one anyhow) I'm fairly certian the catalytic converter isn't needed on a properly running vehicle - some day I hope to have a 5 gas analyzer to prove this theory. also, I don't have a cat on my 92 Z-34 and it runs like a champ --Dave. boechler14
how annoying would this raspiness be? would it sound really cheesie or be real annoying or any thing? one main concern is i dont want it to sound stupid or be annoying
TeeJay3800
I would not worry about it at all with the stock muffler! If you put on a 2-chamber Flowmaster you might want to conisder a resonator. Personally, I think it will sound pretty good with no cat and the stock muff. jeremy
how annoying would this raspiness be? you could sound like a giant bumblebee.......
DaveFromColorado
I only notice the rasping when the engine is under a heavier then normal load (hard acceleration, or up STEEP hills type thing) --Dave.

THe_DeTAiL3R
When you have no muffler that is when it gets loud.. don't worry about the cat effecting the sound too much.
TeeJay3800
When you have no muffler that is when it gets loud.. don't worry about the cat effecting the sound too much. That's bad advice, C-BAD. My car got 2 to 3 times as loud when I put the straight pipe on. Maybe the difference wouldn't be so great with the stock muffler, but taking the cat off will definitely make the car louder.

My point is taking the cat off will make the car louder no matter what kind of muffler it has (or no muffler at all).
chadz34
when you remove your cat you actually gain hp. it's not much but you still should invest in a high flow cat
